Yesterday, in a podcast interview, I was asked,"What is a big change you've seen in organizational culture in the last decade?" My quick reply, "A lack of trust. Our entire culture is suffering a trust-deficit."
Justin Wright's thoughts on this are too good not to share:
"Trust isn't something you can demand from your team. People need to see it in how you lead, make decisions, and treat them every day.
Here are 5 things you can do:
1. Do what you say you'll do. Even with small commitments. If something changes, explain why instead of hoping people won't notice.
2. Share information early. Tell your team what you know, what you don't know, and when they can expect an update. Don't make people guess.
3. Admit when you're wrong. Own your mistakes without making excuses. And show people what you're doing differently as a result.
4. Address problems directly. Don't let poor behavior or unresolved disagreements continue. Have the conversation privately, listen to both sides, and agree on what needs to change.
5. Give people room to make decisions. Set clear expectations, provide support, and let them do their jobs without checking every detail.
And remember, trust between team members matters just as much as trust in the leader. You need to make time for both."
