Below is the latest update from NWS regarding the potential for severe weather today into tonight. Stay weather aware.
Two waves of showers and scattered thunderstorms are expected today. The first wave of rainfall is in progress with showers and storms increasing in coverage and intensity through the rest of the morning. The second wave will move through this evening into the overnight hours. Thunderstorms will have the potential to be strong to severe with isolated damaging wind gusts, small hail, a brief tornado or two, and localized flooding.
Main Takeaways:
Portions of northwestern Georgia are under a Slight Risk (2 on a scale from 0-5) for severe thunderstorms today and tonight, while the rest of North Georgia and northern portions of Central Georgia are under a Marginal Risk (1 on a scale from 0-5).
Portions of North Georgia are under a Moderate Risk for excessive rainfall today. As a result, a Flash Flood Watch is in effect from 8 AM this morning through 6 AM Wednesday for far North Georgia.
Two waves of showers and scattered thunderstorms:
First wave is expected from around ~9 AM - 5 PM (more likely for weak, rotating storms)
Second wave is expected from around ~8 PM - 6 AM (more likely for stronger, widespread winds)
Mainly moderate to heavy showers are expected with isolated to scattered thunderstorms. Some strong to severe storms are expected early in the afternoon with weak supercells possible. Later in the evening, a line of storms with some potential "bowing" segments could bring stronger winds across North Georgia in the evening.
Main threats:
Damaging Wind Gusts – up to 60 mph within stronger thunderstorms and bowing lines of storms.
A Brief Tornado or Two – most likely in the afternoon, but also possible along bowing line segments in the evening.
Isolated Localized Flooding – 1-3 inches of rainfall are expected with locally higher amounts possible. There will be increased runoff and localized flooding in flood-prone areas as rivers, creeks, and streams are running high and soils are already saturated.
Hail – possible with stronger thunderstorms. Mostly pea-size to half-inch will be possible, but 1-inch (severe, quarter-sized) hail cannot be ruled out.
