It’s Teacher Appreciation Week, and today I’m thinking about the incredible hearts behind special education…

The paraprofessional who wipes the same runny nose again and again, without hesitation.
The occupational therapist who patiently works through shoe tying—loop by loop, day after day.
The speech therapist who celebrates like it’s the biggest victory in the world when a second grader says his very first word.
The physical therapist who steadies, encourages, and picks up the bike every time it tips over.
The special education teacher who practices the same list of sight words over and over, knowing one day it will click.
The early childhood special education teacher who plays peek-a-boo and patty cake over and over—building connection, trust, and the very first foundations of learning.
The counselor who listens with kindness, empathy, and an open mind—always making space for big feelings.

These moments may seem small to others, but they are everything. They are progress. They are trust. They are life-changing.

To those who show up with patience, persistence, and unwavering belief in every child—you are seen, you are appreciated, and you are making a difference in ways that truly matter.

Thank you for loving our kids exactly as they are and helping them become everything they can be. 💙

DOE seeks nominations for 2026 SPED Staff of the Year

The department’s Office of Special Education Programs is accepting nominations for the 2026 SPED Staff of the Year award. Parents or guardians may nominate SPED teachers, SPED directors, speech/language pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, school psychologists, or paraprofessionals who made an outstanding impact in their child’s education and have served in their profession for three or more years. Nominations are due Jan. 9 and the announcement will be at the South Dakota SPED Conference in Sioux Falls on March 4. Use the link below to make a nomination!
