Thank you for joining US tonight. We've all braved this heat to be here. That alone tells US something. That the AC is working. 🤣
And that WHAT WE ARE DOING MATTERS.
Let this heat remind US of the burning desire inside each of US to see change in our community. Let this heat remind US that we MUST melt away the WALLS of DIVISION that has frozen our great land. Let this heat forge within US this truth: that each of US can burn like a newborn star. By COMING TOGETHER TONIGHT with our shared passion of our country, we have taken the first long step onto the bridge.
As we gather, those cold hearted and frozen souls can be forgiven, for they know not what they do. Those frozen souls have been stolen by greed. They are paralyzed by fear. Those ICE blocks have only known a world where they see survival through that ice lens.
But WE do not need to hate what has been frozen. WE need only to warm it. For no soul was born wanting to be cold. No child dreams of walls, they dream of open fields and open hands.
So let US be the fire that does not destroy, but the warmth that they seek. Let US be the flame that says: come closer, there is room for you here to eat.
For what good is a flame if it warms no table? Let this be a table long enough for every hand that reaches, wide enough for every family that has been told there is not enough.
Because tonight, in the richest nation history has ever known, children go to bed hungry. Mothers skip meals so their kids don't have to. Neighbors we pass every day are choosing between rent and groceries. That is not scarcity... THAT IS A CHOICE. And WE choose different.
WE choose a nation where no child's stomach growls through a spelling test. WE choose a nation where a full day's work earns a full plate at home. WE choose neighbors over profit margins, and people over quarterly earnings.
This is what WE owe each other simply for sharing this land, this heat, this right...
This right to exist freely.
Our opponents will say community is not how the world works. That survival of the fittest is the natural order. And I say NO.
Community MUST be how OUR world exists. WE are not animals to be sorted by who survives and who does not. WE are not meant to be caged by their same frost bitten lie.
Those hollow winds deceive you when they say a business has no duty to community, only to the shares of a very few. I say NO.
I say a business is a steward of our community, and it MUST lead by example. A business does not grow in a vacuum, it grows because WE buy, WE build, WE show up. So when the harvest comes, WE must be at that table too, not left outside looking in through the glass.
A wage that cannot fill a fridge is not a wage. It is a slow starving dressed up in a paycheck. WE say pay the hands that built your fortune. WE say a company that takes from this land owes this land more than empty parking lots and broken promises.
Those same corporations freeze US out of healthcare. Those same corporations freeze US out of education. The gates they build to protect their wealth, that is a decision they make. But melting those gates, that is a decision WE can make, with our burning desire for a better world.
A doctor's visit should not cost a family their rent. A diagnosis should not come with a second sentence, bankruptcy. WE say healthcare is not a luxury for the few who can afford the co-pay, it is a right for every soul that draws breath in this nation.
And a child should not inherit their zip code's debt just to learn to read. WE say a diploma should not come chained to decades of payments. Education lit the first fire in every one of US in this crowd tonight, so why do WE now charge our children admission to that same flame?
A house should be a home, not a hedge fund's line item. WE watch families priced out of the streets they grew up on, watch grandmothers choose between medicine and rent, watch the walls WE just melted go right back up, this time built from lease agreements and locked doors.
WE say a roof is not a reward for winning some invisible race. It is the floor WE all deserve to stand on before WE even begin to run.
They will tell you there is no room. But WE have seen the empty towers standing dark against the night sky while our neighbors sleep in cars. That is not scarcity... THAT IS A CHOICE. And WE choose different.
We were guaranteed unalienable rights as a nation, as a FLOCK. And they have chilled US down to the very movement that is supposed to keep US warm as a community. What the FLOCK do they think we would do, in a country founded on principles far larger than those frozen minds could ever hold?
And now... WE arrive at the fire itself.
For decades, they told US to ignore the heat. They told US this burning was normal, that the ice caps had always wept, that the storms had always howled this loud. They handed US their frost bitten lie wrapped in a business suit, and called it PROGRESS.
But WE feel this heat tonight. WE feel it in this very room. And WE know now what our grandchildren will know then, that this is not the warmth of community, this is a fever. A fever WE did not choose, sold to US by the same hollow winds that starved US, that priced US out, that froze US from the doctor's door.
WE say the flame that warms a table is not the same flame that burns a forest. WE say the fire in US must be the fire that heals this land, not the fire that consumes it. So WE will not melt one more glacier for their profit margins. WE will not trade our children's summers for their quarterly earnings.
That is not the cost of progress... THAT IS A CHOICE. And WE choose different.
Now let's talk about the ballot box.
They spent a lot of money convincing US our vote doesn't matter. Which is a strange thing to spend that much money on, if it's true. I mean, nobody's out here running expensive ad campaigns telling you your umbrella doesn't work in the rain. They only fight this hard against the thing that actually works.
WE have been told to wait our turn. WE have been told the line is too long, the ID too complicated, the polling place too far, the ballot too confusing. Funny how all those obstacles only seem to show up in OUR neighborhoods.
Let me tell you something about ice. Ice does not melt because you ask it nicely. It melts because enough heat gathers in one place, long enough, together, until it has no choice but to move.
That is what YOUR vote is. Not a request. Not a suggestion whispered into a box and hoped for. It is heat. It is OUR heat, gathered in one place, on one day, until the whole frozen system has no choice but to move.
So WE say this: a democracy that only works for the few who show up is not a democracy... THAT IS A CHOICE. And WE choose different. WE choose all of US, every voice, every hand, every single one of US at that table.
WE were taught, some of US in uniform, some of US just raised right, that YOU do not leave your own behind. Not on the field, not on the march, not when the fire gets hottest and the smoke gets thickest. YOU go back for them.
So tell me why, when the fight ends and the uniform comes off, this nation suddenly forgets that promise? Tell me why the ones who bled for this ground come home to sleep on it instead, in doorways, in cars, in shelters with more names on the waiting list than beds. THAT IS NOT HONOR... THAT IS A CHOICE. And WE choose different.
WE say no one gets left behind. Not on the battlefield, and not on the block WE grew up on either.
WE pledge our allegiance, not to a flag alone, but to the people who stand beneath it. WE pledge allegiance to all who walk this land, our neighbors, our strangers, our friends WE have not met yet. And WE pledge that same allegiance to all who exist in this world, one family, indivisible, with liberty, and dignity, and a place at the table, for all.
So WE stand here tonight, not at the end of anything, but at the beginning.
Remember that bridge WE stepped onto when WE first walked into this heat together? WE are still on it. Every one of US. And bridges are not crossed by standing still and hoping the other side comes to meet you.
WE cross it together... or WE do not cross it at all.
So here is YOUR part. Tomorrow, WE knock on doors. WE make the calls WE don't want to make. WE drive the neighbor who has no ride to the polls. WE feed the family down the street before WE ask them for a single thing in return. WE do the unglamorous, unphotographed, unglorified work of COMMUNITY, because that work is the fire. Not the speech. Not tonight. The work.
They gave US ice and called it order. WE will give this nation UNITY, and call it what it has always deserved to be called: HOME.
They gave US walls and called it safety. WE will give this nation open hands, and call it FREEDOM, freedom for every soul, in every corner, at every table, under this same burning sky.
So look at the person next to you. Look at them. That is not a stranger. That is YOUR community. That is YOUR unity. That is YOUR freedom, standing right beside you, burning just as bright as you are.
WE are not ICE... (look around)... WE are not walls. WE are not the frost bitten lie they tried to sell US...
WE are NEWBORN STARS, every single one of US, and tonight... WE LIGHT THE WHOLE SKY TOGETHER.
Thank you. Now let's get to work.
