Three years later, many of the questions that made the Montgomery Riverfront Brawl resonate are still with us. Black Americans continue to navigate a reality where routine encounters can escalate without warning, families still fight for answers after suspicious deaths, and battles over Black history, voting rights, and equity remain front-page news.

That’s why Montgomery became more than a viral moment. It reminded many people of something Black communities have always understood: when institutions fall short, we often rely on each other. Long before hashtags, that looked like mutual aid, churches, neighbors, and ordinary people stepping in when no one else would.

We still laugh at the folding chair and the swim across the river but the issues underneath that moment never left
