Metallurgical coal is a key ingredient in the steelmaking process, and without it, many of the structures and systems we rely on every day simply wouldn't exist.

Unlike thermal coal, which is primarily used to generate electricity, metallurgical coal is used to produce coke, a high-carbon fuel that provides both the heat and chemical reaction needed to transform iron ore into steel.

The steel produced using metallurgical coal can be found nearly everywhere. While most people never see the process firsthand, its impact is all around them. From the ground beneath our feet to the infrastructure that keeps our world moving, metallurgical coal remains an essential part of building, maintaining, and advancing modern society.

Around here, culture is built on hard work, trust, and accountability. It’s knowing the person next to you has your back and holding yourself to the same standard. It’s learning from those who’ve been doing it for years and passing that knowledge on to the next group.

It’s the kind of place where you learn fast, work hard, and become part of something bigger than yourself. It’s not always easy, but it’s real, and it’s strong. 💪

Affinity Coal Company is more than a place on a map, it's a place built on hard work, pride, and the people who make it what it is. Underground and on the surface, it takes dedication, skill, and teamwork to produce some of the highest-quality metallurgical coal in the world.

But what makes Affinity special isn't just the coal. It's the generations of miners, the friendships built through long shifts, and the shared commitment to doing the job right. It's the pride of knowing that the work done here helps produce the steel used in bridges, buildings, vehicles, and infrastructure worldwide.

We're proud of the mine. We're proud of the work. And most importantly, we're proud of the people who make Affinity what it is. 🖤

A little throwback to last week, when WVU Baseball defeated Kentucky in the NCAA Regional game while proudly wearing their Coal Rush uniforms.

Seeing a talented group of young men represent our state while honoring one of its most important industries was a moment worth celebrating. We're proud of the country roads that lead us home, but we're even prouder of the people, schools, communities, and generations of West Virginians who made those roads worth traveling.

Thank you, Mountaineers, for proudly representing the spirit of West Virginia, and good luck in your next game against Troy! 💙💛

Some of the strongest friendships are built where the work is hardest.

In mining, you're not just working alongside a crew, you're building trust with people who become like family. Through the early mornings, long shifts, and challenges that come with the job, friendships are formed that last far beyond the workday.

That's the kind of brotherhood you can't find just anywhere.

This National Best Friends Day, we're celebrating the friendships forged underground, on the surface, and everywhere in between.

Now this is a strength you don’t see every day. Built from rock, powered by steel, and formed under pressure, just like the work we do at United Coal. This Coal Pokémon isn’t about flashy moves or quick wins. It’s about endurance, grit, and the kind of power that shows up day after day and gets the job done.

From Steel Spark fueling the next generation to Blast Furnace Burn turning raw materials into something stronger, it represents what metallurgical coal really does, keeping the process moving and building what the world depends on. Because without that kind of strength, there’s no steel, no infrastructure, and no skyline.

It’s tough, reliable, and built to last. So we’ve got to ask, if this were your Coal Pokémon, what strength would you give it? More power? More endurance? Or something built to handle the pressure? Drop your answer below. 💪🖤

Before modern systems and technology, this is what getting miners in and out of the mine looked like.

This historic hoist mechanism from a West Virginia mine served as the link between the surface and the work happening deep underground. Surrounded by the buildings that supported daily operations, it was responsible for moving crews through the shaft, shift after shift.

It may look simple by today’s standards, but there was nothing small about its role. The equipment has changed over time, but the purpose hasn’t!

Taking care of the job starts with taking care of yourself, and we have some tips for Men's Health Month.

In this line of work, strength matters, but real strength is knowing when to look out for your health. Long shifts, tough conditions, and demanding days can take a toll over time. That’s why it’s important to stay ahead of it.

Here are four simple ways to take back your health:
⛏️: See your doctor regularly
⛏️: Prioritize sleep
⛏️: Quit smoking
⛏️: Minimize stress

Whether it’s you or someone you care about, looking out for your health means more time doing what matters most, on the job and at home.
