School starts August 10 across East Tennessee.
The first week is always a little chaotic: new routes, new schedules, more kids walking and biking and getting picked up at different times.
Here are a few reminders worth passing along before the week kicks off:
1. Watch for school buses. If the arm is extended, you stop. That rule applies regardless of which side of the road you're on or how far back you are.
2. Slow down in school zones. 15 mph means 15 mph. Enforcement is active from the first day.
3. Use crosswalks, and teach your kids to make eye contact with drivers before stepping out.
4. Check your home cameras after school. The hours between 3:00 p.m. and 6 p.m. see more residential activity than most homeowners realize. If your entry points aren't covered, that's worth addressing.
