Some people are always expecting the worst. You can leverage this in your marketing messages by pointing out potential negative consequences of not using your product or service. But as always, you should be ethical and refrain from inventing or exaggerating those consequences. The truth can be compelling in its own right.

It turns out that people actually have very selective memories about past events. In marketing, you can account for this by giving the most emotional charge to the most important part of your message, or by placing it at the very end of your communication.

It's an unfortunate truth that human beings prefer not to think very hard for very long. When faced with a challenge, we tend to focus on small, simple changes we can make to address it. This is precisely why your marketing CTAs should be as easy to perform as possible; if you ask too much, your audience might rather prefer to do nothing.

Outgroup Homogeneity Bias can be used to reinforce brand loyalty among your customers. For example, most people in Western cultures enjoy being perceived as unique individuals. With this is mind, you could praise your own customers as "saavy, independent thinkers" and lambast customers of a competitor as "people who go along with the crowd". However, we would generally advise against starting flame wars between audiences.

Non-Adaptive Choice Switching can turn your competitor's former clients into your future clients. Use your marketing communications to point out how your product or service differs from your competitor's and will therefore lead to a different outcome. This approach also benefits from Distinction Bias to make your offer appear more unique than it otherwise might. ⚖️

Your prospective customer's physiological state can and does affect their response to your offer. Often, you won't be able to alter their physiological state, but you can modify your communications around it. For example, you might not want to ask for the sale if a lead is sick, in pain, or having a bad day. On the other hand, brining a snack to a sales pitch can make your audience more receptive.

Implicit Association is a powerful heuristic with unlimited options for leveraging. To begin, consider what customer need your product or service is satisfying. Then brainstorm words, images, and feelings that are closely related to having that particular need met. Your marketing communications should invoke these concepts as frequently as possible to build an association between your product and your customer getting their needs met.

The Illusory Truth Effect can be a challenging bias to work around if your product or service is truly novel from other alternatives. For this reason, you may want to intentionally draw comparisons to well-known concepts in your marketing. Analogies can also be helpful here.

People like to be in control of things, and the Illusion of Control makes us feel like we have more control than we actually do. Marketers can leverage this cognitive bias by offering relatively small customization and personalization options for their product or service. Even if the actual changes to the product are minor, your customer will still feel as though they've made it their own.
