On May 30, 2022, China's first intelligent power plant that generates electricity using solar and tidal power was connected to the power grid.

The completion of the power plant in Zhejiang Province, east China, highlights the country's new successes in the usage of maritime energy resources, as well as the development and building of its new energy network.

According to China Energy Investment Corporation (China Energy), a leading energy behemoth, the power plant is located in Wugen Township in the city of Wenling and has an installed capacity of 100 megawatts.

Its yearly power generation output surpassed 100 million kWh, which is enough to cover the annual electricity demand of around 30,000 metropolitan families. When compared to traditional coal power plants, the power plant's electricity generating capability saves approximately 31,000 tonnes of standard coal and reduces carbon dioxide emissions by about 85,000 tonnes per year.

Unmanned aerial vehicle inspection technologies and AI intelligent diagnosis systems are used in the plant.

Recent heat waves in California have put a strain on the state's energy infrastructure, drawing attention to the state's efforts to expand its use of renewable energy.

Legislation in California is pushing for the state to transition to carbon-free electricity by 2045, and this requires that all electricity supplied at retail and by the state originate from renewable sources. As a result of new laws, more electric vehicles are being sold, and sales of gasoline-powered cars are being gradually phased out.

Some, like the state's oldest irrigation district, are getting inventive about how to get to California's renewable energy objectives without making the massive expenditures in clean energy infrastructure that will be required to do so. The purpose of irrigation districts is to control and administer the flow of water for beneficial purposes, such as irrigation and human consumption.

Monocrystalline

With the best efficiency ratings in the industry, monocrystalline solar panels are the best choice. In normal circumstances, these solar panels can convert more than 20% of the sun's rays into power, and the most efficient panels now reach 22% efficiency.

Mono panels generate more electricity per square foot when you have limited roof space. Many homeowners prefer mono solar panels' black photovoltaic cells than poly solar panels.

These panels are expensive, but they produce more power per panel.

Polycrystalline

Polycrystalline solar panels are less efficient than monocrystalline silicon panels, but cheaper. High efficiency is only important when you have limited room for solar panels on your roof. When space isn't an issue, you can add more polycrystalline panels to compensate for their lower efficiency. Lesser efficiency doesn't indicate lower quality when comparing solar panels.

Thin-Film

Thin-film panels aren't cell-divided like polycrystalline and monocrystalline panels. Their entire surface is photovoltaic. These flexible, lightweight panels use material layers instead of rigid cells.

Window and other vertical surfaces can use adhesive thin-film panels. RV solar panels also use these panels. Thin-film panels are less efficient than mono and poly panels, therefore you need a greater area to produce as much power.

Last time, we posted about the founder of photovoltaic effect, the French physicist Edmond Becquerel.

This time, let's talk about solar cells.

Bell labs, with the help of these three physicists, were able to build the first viable solar cells. The three men worked for several months on improving the properties of their silicon solar cells. Bell Labs revealed the idea in New Jersey on April 25, 1954. They powered a toy Ferris wheel and radio transmitter using their solar panel.

First silicon solar cells were 6% efficient at converting sunlight into electricity, a substantial advance over prior solar cells.

Did you know that the United Nations Environment Program started the "International Day of the Sun"? This event is held every year on May 3 to show how important solar energy is.

To commemorate this event, here's a fun fact about the inventor of photovoltaic effect.

The man in the picture is the French physicist Edmond Becquerel who found the photovoltaic effect in 1839 while he was playing around with a cell made of metal electrodes in a conducting solution. He saw that when the cell was exposed to light, it made more electricity.

In 1883, about 50 years after the discovery of the photovoltaic effect, American inventor Charles Fritz invented the first operational selenium sun cell. 3 Though modern solar panels use silicon in their cells, this solar cell was a crucial forerunner to the technology used today.

Many physicists contributed to the development of solar cells in some way. Becquerel is credited with discovering the photovoltaic effect's potential, whereas Fritz is credited with inventing the ancestor of all solar cells.
