Boys’ Soccer in the Rain ⚽🌧️

Rain, rain, go away… No such luck for the Pine Grove Area Boys’ Soccer team on Homecoming weekend! But those rain clouds had a silver lining: a 3–1 win for the Cardinals!

The rain poured down at Cardinal Stadium, but it never dampened the team’s determination. The boys kept pushing and gave the Homecoming crowd a victory to celebrate.

The rented Sony 300mm lens delivered once again, and its rain cover worked perfectly. As I mentioned in the Girls’ Soccer post, my own rain protection wasn’t quite as successful—I ended up SOAKED! Better me than the lens, though. 😂

This wraps up my Homecoming coverage. Thank you for your patience while I finished these images! Fall keeps me busy photographing seniors, families, and children, then giving their portraits the finishing touches.

Enjoy the photos, and give the boys a thumbs-up, a heart, or a comment to celebrate their hard work and Homecoming win! 👏

An Afternoon in the Sun ☀️

I don’t often photograph in direct sunlight, but a field of goldenrod in full bloom was the perfect invitation to try something different. And Aaliyah was the perfect person to help bring the idea to life!

Aaliyah signed up to help us test our lighting as we were wrapping up our Invitational Sessions in late winter and early spring. For this outdoor session, the sunlight, location, and model came together just as I’d hoped.

A light cloud cover softened the sunshine, and the goldenrod’s rich yellow tones complemented Aaliyah’s hair and outfit beautifully. She brought a wonderful variety of expressions and poses, giving each image its own personality.

Sessions like this are why I enjoy experimenting. This lighting technique opens up new creative possibilities, and I’m excited to explore them further.

Thank you, Aaliyah, for helping me try something new! Take a look at her images and let me know which one catches your eye. 📸

Girls’ Soccer – Homecoming Weekend ⚽🌧️

And let the rain begin…

Sometimes the weather forecast misses the mark. This time, it was right on target! Rain—and LOTS of it—arrived at Cardinal Stadium just as the game got underway. Fans huddled beneath big umbrellas to cheer on their favorite players, while I headed to the sidelines with my Sony camera, rented 300mm lens, and a special rain cover for the equipment.

My Carhartt hooded jacket? That’s another story. It’s warm, but waterproof it is not! Apparently, it doubles as a sponge. 😂 I was so caught up in following the action that I barely noticed how soaked I’d become. By the end, I’m pretty sure I was carrying an extra five to ten pounds of rainwater!

The Sony 300mm lens handled its assignment beautifully. I used it for every image here, and the sharpness, quick autofocus, and ability to bring the action closer made photographing the game a real treat—even in that downpour.

A trip to Bass Pro Shops for proper rain gear may be in my future!

The best part? The Pine Grove girls brought home a win! 👏

Take a look at the photos and help give these athletes some encouragement. A like, a heart, or a comment cheering on your favorite player means a lot. These students put in the time and effort for the love of the game. Let’s show them their hard work is appreciated!

The Cardinal Clash Cross Country Meet 🏃🍂

A fall day, more than a hundred athletes from various schools, and plenty of energy as runners warmed up for the Cardinal Clash!

I’ve always admired cross-country runners. Racing up and down hills takes endurance, determination, and a willingness to keep pushing when the course gets tough. Much like wrestling, there’s both an individual challenge and a team effort. Each runner works toward a personal best while helping their team succeed.

We had cloudy skies but stayed dry for the meet. The rain held off until the soccer matches later in the day—and for that, this photographer was thankful!

I used the rented Sony 300mm lens for all these images except the group photos. It was a great opportunity to bring the action closer and capture the runners’ focus and determination.

Enjoy the photos, and give these hardworking athletes a little encouragement in the comments! 👏

Pine Grove Area High School Volleyball 🏐

More Homecoming sports photos are on the way, with three more sports to share after this!

Pine Grove has a strong volleyball tradition, and this year’s team is keeping it alive! During the first game, I thought their opponents might take the win. But the Pine Grove players dug deep, overcame the deficit, and pulled out an exciting victory. What a comeback!

If you enjoy fast-paced action and impressive teamwork, come out and catch a game. These girls give you plenty to cheer about!

Another bonus for this photographer? Volleyball is indoors! I stayed dry during the torrential rain—at least until it was time to photograph the girls’ and boys’ soccer games. 🌧️

I didn’t use the rented Sony 300mm lens much for volleyball, but I loved the few images I captured with it. Most were taken through the net, focusing on the Pine Grove players’ faces. It gave me a different perspective and some images I really enjoyed.

I expect to finish the remaining Homecoming sports photos this week and will share each set as it’s ready. Enjoy the volleyball action!66

👑 Pine Grove Area High School — Crowning of the Queen
After the deluge we experienced during both the girls’ and boys’ soccer games, the rain finally cooperated! By the time the Homecoming Queen ceremony began, the skies had settled down, and the crowning went off without a hitch.
And now... drumroll, please! 🥁
Congratulations to Kylie Hatter, Pine Grove Area High School’s 2027 Homecoming Queen! 👑
Kylie opened her wrapped box to discover the 2027 Homecoming Queen sash, making the moment official. Congratulations to Kylie and all of this year’s Homecoming Queen contestants!
While the rain took a break, the wind certainly didn’t. It made photographing the ceremony a little more challenging, with hair flying in just about every direction!
A quick note about these images: Some were originally included in our PGA Homecoming Football Game post. We’ve since updated them to remove distracting flyaway hair caused by the wind, so attention stays where it belongs—on the students and this special Homecoming moment.
Congratulations again, Kylie! 👑📸

Haydyn Mixes the Great Outdoors with Heavy Machinery 📸

One of my favorite parts of senior photography is discovering the places and interests that make each senior’s portraits feel uniquely theirs. For Haydyn, the great outdoors and heavy machinery gave us two different settings—and he looked right at home in both!

That blend of nature and machines reflects different sides of his personality. Throughout both sessions, Haydyn’s easygoing manner kept everything relaxed and fun. Whether surrounded by nature or standing alongside heavy equipment, he brought the same comfortable confidence to his images.

As the sun began to set around the machinery, the light gave those portraits a character all their own. The warm glow, shadows, and textures came together so beautifully that some of the images almost look like paintings. It was an exciting way to wrap up our time together!

Take a look at Haydyn’s images and let me know which one catches your eye!

Every senior has a story. We’re here to help tell yours.

A Hard-Fought Homecoming Win for Pine Grove Area! 🏈

What a night for the Cardinals! The crowd, cheerleaders, band, and players were ready for an exciting Homecoming game, and they got one. The rain let up as Pine Grove Area took the field, and the Cardinals gave everyone a hard-fought win to celebrate.

I’ve posted photos from the game and the crowning of the 2026 Pine Grove Area High School Homecoming Queen. I photographed all the game action with the rented Sony 300mm lens, and it did exactly what I’d hoped: brought the action closer and delivered sharp images. If you look closely when I ship it back on Wednesday, you might see a tear in my eye. 📦🥲

Enjoy the photos! I’ll share more action from Saturday’s Homecoming events later this week.

300mm Lens Samples 📸

Rain, rain, rain! Saturday’s Pine Grove Area Homecoming events were a wet one. Thankfully, I had a “raincoat” for the rented Sony 300mm lens, courtesy of Jeff Pittenger. The camera stayed dry. I, on the other hand, was soaked to the bone! My Carhartt coat kept me warm, but waterproof it is not.

Even with the rain, I had a great time putting the lens through its paces. I used denoise on the football images, and I’ll share more Homecoming photos soon, including shots taken with my other lenses.

All images by Gray's Mountain Studio.

For now, here are a few samples from the 300mm!
