I was asked what is the history of the building the West Springs Spook House, AKA The old cannery building.

The building was built under a South Carolina educational initiative to provide community based agriculture centers where local farmers could can their produce. The need of such centers grew under war effort of 1940s.

Future Farmers of America (FAA) would help families safely can their food. These buildings were built on school grounds and the state provided the machinery. Clemson’s university agriculture extension program provided oversight of the high school agriculture students supporting the labor in the cannery. Farming and the mills were the main source of employment in Union county through the 80s. The cannery was probably last used to can items in the 1950s.

The steam vats and boilers are still in the Spook house in the old ticket sales window. A large pit area was removed in the early 2000s for safety reasons. It was a large cinderblock pool. Ask Tim Stevens about his time wearing a wet suit and rising up out of the much.

The loading area is the back room. There is a large load bearing wall in the middle that has a door each end. Otherwise, the building was open space where tables were set up to help process the vegetables and fruit.

After the West Springs school closed down and consolidated into Jonesville school district the cannery sat unused.

When the community saw how popular the spook house was, which was first just a joke, Bucky Sprouse and the Boy Scouts cleaned out the old cannery, boarded up the windows, and the Spook house was established in the late 70s.

Power was added in the early 80s for safety.

We are lucky to have our old high school amd cannery still standing. Union county parks and recreation owns the property but the community manages it.

We continue to preserve some of the historical aspects of the cannery. Pay attention and you will still spot some old artifacts from in our show from the cannery.

Eat, drink, and be scary!

We are a vintage style haunt doing what we do best. Our guides gives each group their own tour. Some classic scares, some new tricks, sharing of old times “when”, and making new memories. It’s what we do best.

How about seeing some spooks of Hallowen past:

I have been curating old vintage masks since the 1980s. Spooking is hard on masks. Only Warlord was used and saved from the Spookhouse. The others are copies I found on eBay and through some haunted friends.

Back in the 80s most masks were purchased from Morris Costumes in Charlotte. Morris carried a diverse line of masks not sold in stores.

Which spook was your favorite?

Mine is Carnivore by Distortions Unlimited. Wayne Henderson wore it as the Waynedoodle.

Mask copies used in the West Springs Spook House since 1973.

Last year was amazing. This year will be great! One more month!
