I am excited to announce my participation as a speaker at the GovPreneurs Summit in Raleigh, NC, on November 9–10.

At the summit, I’ll be joining other experts focused on helping entrepreneurs build and grow their businesses through government contracting.

One of the areas I’ll be discussing is scaling through collaboration and strategic partnerships.

Partnerships can be a powerful positioning tool that helps businesses accelerate growth, expand their knowledge, and gain access to new opportunities. However, it’s important to recognize that not all partnerships are created equal.

Together, we’ll discuss how to identify and build aligned partnerships throughout the government contracting journey.

Through my work with the Baltimore Metropolitan Women’s Business Center and EDAC over the past few years, supporting procurement readiness, I’ve learned that many businesses are interested in pursuing government contracts but don’t always know where or how to start.

GovPreneurs provides resources, education, and connections designed to help bridge that gap and connect businesses with potential partners.

I would love for you to join me at the GovPreneurs Summit on November 9–10 in Raleigh, NC.

Most owners want to automate what frustrates them most, but that's usually the process nobody has ever defined or written down.

Automation isn't designed to ask questions, it just repeats what it's told, so a process you've been improvising for years becomes a process you're now improvising at scale.

The real work happens before you touch any tools. It happens by defining the thing first.

Our 8/30 AI Build Day starts with definitions, not tools or prompts or scripts.

You've tried starting with the tools, and that's where the focus went. This time, start with the process.

Ready for a different approach and a different outcome?

Join us at AI Build Day on August 30th - https://buildday.automa8it.com/

During the Small Business, Big Impact Summit in June, our panel was asked what it actually takes for a business to gain momentum and scale. My answer was three words. Do the boring things.

It got a laugh, and then it got quiet, because everyone in that room knew exactly which boring thing they had been avoiding.

Let's be real, we didn't start our businesses to be boring. Boring is quiet, often invisible, and it doesn't quite scratch the dopamine itch. Attending a new networking event feels more productive than following up on the leads already sitting in your pipeline.

Calling an existing client just to ask how they're doing, or writing down the system you've been carrying in your head so someone else on your team can run it without you, these are the small actions that create sustainability. It isn't exciting, but it is structural.

Structure comes before scaling or compounding. The weekly check-in you never cancel becomes the reason your team stops guessing what you want.

The process you wrote down becomes the reason you can hand it off without holding your breath. The standard you hold when it would be easier not to becomes the thing people trust about working with you. These are the things that lead to a version of your business a year from now that runs better and gives you room to do the exciting things away from it.

Underneath almost every genuinely growing business is a short list of unglamorous things done over and over by someone who decided consistency was more interesting than novelty. The shiny new thing whispers that it's the one that will finally make everything take off, and I feel that pull too, but it pulls against the life we started these businesses to live.

So what's the boring thing you've been avoiding?

If you're a business owner who doesn't sell AI as a service, you don't need to become an expert AI builder. You need to be the expert in your business who uses AI in a way that supports your operations.

Most AI courses and tutorials are built around AI rather than around business, so owners walk away understanding the tools without knowing how to apply them. They attend a class and leave with a list of twenty tools, a few hours of tutorials to watch, and a pile of unanswered questions. Weeks later they've lost focus on the business itself, because the "simple solution" was not simple and it solved nothing.

That happens because those courses are built to answer the question "How do I use AI?"

The better question is simpler. How do I run my business more efficiently with AI-enabled processes?

There's probably one task you repeat every week, one process that eats more time than it should, one corner of the business where you've caught yourself thinking there has to be an easier way. That's not something you need to learn. You already know exactly what it is.

You also know you don't have a ton of time to spend learning AI and chasing tools that change every few months. What you want to know is which one eases the pain.

That's what AI Build Day is for. This event allows you to bring a real task, a real bottleneck, a real problem you're tired of working around, and we'll spend the day finding where AI fits into how you already work.

Instead of leaving with a notebook full of ideas and a dozen open tabs for apps you can't pronounce, you'll leave with a problem solved and the roadmap to solve the next one.

I am embarrassed to admit this, but I am going to be transparent because it may help someone else learn this, too.

The official Juneteenth colors are NOT red, black, and green.
I know, I know, everything in the stores (and the shirt I am wearing) and most posts online say otherwise. But the truth is, the official Juneteenth flag, designed by Ben Haith in 1997, is red, white, and blue. The colors are a deliberate statement that Black Americans are Americans, full and free Americans.

Truth be told, the more I researched, the more I realized how much I did not know about the history that shapes me. We live in the information age, and yet we still experience a similar reality to the enslaved ancestors in Texas. A reality where information exists that we do not all have the privilege to access, experience, or benefit from.

So on this Juneteenth, I am not rushing to wrap this up as a "lessons learned" post and then move on. I am sitting with the discomfort of knowing that I have many more lessons to learn, and the importance of why I will keep learning.

I'm curious, Where did you learn about Juneteenth?

On Tuesday, Battle Plan Strategic Consulting received the 2026 Impact and Excellence Award from the Greater Silver Spring Chamber of Commerce, and I had the honor of being there to celebrate with Laurin and the team.

Being recognized for impact and excellence reflects Battle Plan's years of work with mission-driven organizations and the communities they serve.

And here is what made the day so much more meaningful. During the event, I learned Silver Spring was once a sundown town, a place where Black families were legally and socially excluded from for the better part of the twentieth century. I also learned that, today, it is the most diverse city in America. For a Black woman CEO to be honored in that space, recognized by the very community that her predecessors were once barred from, is a big deal. It illuminates the work Laurin founded Battle Plan to support so others can continue to pave the path for the people coming behind them.

Today was the celebration of an award, a reminder of why this work matters, who it serves, and how much of what we get to call progress was built by people who refused to let the doors stay closed behind them.

Huge congratulations to Laurin and the entire Battle Plan team. I am honored to celebrate alongside you.

The latest book I finished, "Where the Wildflowers Are," was a surprising read for me.

It was deliberately slow-paced and made me realize how, even in my attempts at leisure, I still want things to move faster.

The book follows a few initially unconnected people who converge at a flower farm, where each undergoes a journey that gives them space to heal from trauma and move out of survival mode. What I loved most was how the setting itself, the flower farm, illustrates the beauty in the journey and the fullness of truly living in the moment.

As a business owner, mom, Type A personality, and overachiever, my eyes are usually focused on the result. But the real prize is found along the way.

I am definitely still recovering from survival mode, and this book helped move me forward.

Another surprise was that it made me look at flowers differently.

Typically, I am not a fan. They make no sense to me because they take all year to grow just to bloom for 14 days. As a gift, they make even less sense because my first thought is, "Did you just give me something dead?"

But that perspective comes from already looking past today's beauty to the ending instead of allowing myself to enjoy the beauty that exists while it is here.

The truth is that much of the process is hard and not particularly beautiful. If I can't enjoy and appreciate the bloom while it is here, then what is it all for?

Pausing to focus on the beauty that is, rather than what comes next,
is a skill I need to practice. This book was a refreshing and healing reminder of that.

Don't F-up. Follow up.

Here is a hard truth.
The growth you want in your business is in conversations you neglected to have.

It doesn't require new leads. What you need is in the leads you already have, the ones that went quiet, the ones you decided were a no because you did not hear back fast enough OR even worse you didn't even ASK. You did not lose those deals to a competitor or a better price. You lost them to silence, to someone that made one more touchpoint. The loss was self-inflicted - OUCH!

The numbers on this are almost uncomfortable to look at. Only about 2% of sales close on the first contact. Meanwhile, roughly 80% of sales require five or more follow-ups before they close. So if you are sending one message and reading the silence as a no, you are quitting before you really start.

Let's do a reframe here

1) A non-response is not always a no. It can be "not right now", "it got buried", "I meant to reply and forgot", "I'm waiting on budget", "I'm dealing with something bigger this week". None of those are no. All of them are still open, and none of them can respond to a follow-up that doesnt happen.

2) Following up is not pestering. Pestering is sending the same "just checking in" message over and over with nothing new to say. Real follow-up gives the other person a reason to re-engage. It can be a case study email that shows them the outcome someone like them already got. It can be a text with a link to a tool or a calculator that makes their decision easier. It can be a check-in call at a moment that actually matters to them. It can be an updated service menu that answers a question they did not know they had. Every one of those hands them something, instead of just asking them for something.

3) The follow-up isn't an annoying, optional part of the pipeline. It is the pipeline. The first message opens the door. The follow-up is what actually guides your audience from the door to the action you want them to take. The reason follow-up gets skipped is not that anyone decided it was unimportant. It gets skipped because it lives in someone's memory instead of in a system, and memory loses to a busy week every single time.

The only reliable way to make sure the follow-up actually happens is to create a process then automate it. You build the sequence once, and the system carries the conversation forward even when you are heads down in everything else.

So before you write off another quiet lead as a lost one, or spend time generating leads just to abandon them, be honest with yourself. Did they say no, or did you just stop having the conversation?

Let's chat: On a scale of 1 - 5 how would you rate your follow up game?
