Scout has been cooped up in the house and been itching to get back out in the woods. When it snows, tracking calls almost always come to a halt because of obvious reasons. But there seems to be a situation that pops up that you get a snow track from time to time. Rifle season in general I think has been our slowest season to date for calls. This was our 3rd call.

I was contacted last night that the hunter had thought he shot and hit the deer twice. They got down before dark to check for blood. The deer had only went 50 or so yds after the shot and had bedded down. We showed up at the 6 hr mark to take a look at the sign and see what we thought. We located the deer bedded 330 yds from the first bed. We came to the decision to just back out and come back in the morning. When we showed up in the morning….scout was amped up to go again. I don’t even think he was hardly tracking the deer just followed our boot tracks towards where we left off last night. He ended up taking a wrong turn away from the deer. I quickly got him back on track and he went back the other way and we looked up. I told the hunters last night the deer would move as they always seem to do after you locate them and back out. He did do that but maybe only 40 yds or so. The deer jumped up as we were approaching and took off. The deers head was on the ground at one point before the jump. I knew he didn’t have much time left. We re located the buck, we backed out back to the vehicle and the hunter finished the deer.

Even with snow I saw in 3 small spots of blood on a branch and some grass. Other than that even with snow no blood was visible. The deer was hit back in the intestines and lower back leg.

I was really glad to help Troy get his deer because earlier this year we tracked a buck for him 1.6 miles to the Wisconsin river. Scout was telling us the deer had crossed. I should have took my boat and looked on the other side, because I guess the landowner across the river found the deer near the bank on the other side. Also refused to give the hunter his rack on that one. Unfortunate on that but this one worked out!

I’m guessing there will not be many more if any tracking calls for Scout to take this year. It’s been a great year for us with tracking around a full time job and a couple of my own hunting trips.

22 recoveries I believe out of 58 or so tracks. Should have a had few more but messed up situations came up like the river thing, landowners denying permission on multiple occasions, and one where a neighbor went for a walk to find the deer after granting us permission 🤦‍♂️.

All in All I’m happy with the season thus far!

Some future announcements for Trails End Deer Recovery will be posted sometime this offseason. Stay tuned.

Here I go again. Going the extra mile lol. I called the Hunter back from the track that Matt did yesterday. He was hesitant on even having me come out. I told him I would do it free of charge. I just had a feeling that the shot was fatal Based on the pictures Matt sent me of the bloody bed. Sure as s**t, I showed up not knowing exactly where these beds were. I was on the phone with Matt and he was trying to describe based off landmarks where these beds were. I must have got scout close enough because he all of sudden locked into a scent line. Not to much later I see old blood. 200 yds later BAM! Dead buck! I went with a gut feeling I had and I was right! Whoo! Congrats to the hunter and he really thanked me for urging him to go out again to look because he had told himself the deer was prolly gonna be fine. 44hrs after the hunter shot the deer.

Yesterday….I took a day off of tracking as I wanted to do some hunting myself. Matt called me and told me a past client of ours had referred us to someone he knew. I told Matt to have at it! When Matt was on his way i got another call so I sent him on that one also.

The first track Scout and matt were dealing with a deer that the hunter found a bed at, at about 150 yds. Hunter was unsure of shot placement. Scout struggled a bit but 350 yds past the first bed, they jump a very large buck. They find 2 beds close to each other. They backed out and called the tracked off. After talking to Matt I decided to call the hunter back and I will be hopefully following up on this to double check late morning.

The second track Matt told me Scout locked in right away and was off. He blew past the hunters last blood at 300 yds. He continued the scent line another 300yds and led the Hunter and Matt to this nice buck!

This one was pretty straight forward. The hunter contacted me about mid day asking my thoughts on a buck he arrowed early this morning. After describing how the deer reacted after the shot I suggested waiting till evening would be best. He took a little look after that but decided backing out and waiting would be best. Good decision, the deer was hit back and covered 230 yds with very little blood. Great work and decisions by all made for a quick recovery.

We also came up empty on a second track this evening. Scout advanced the hunters blood some and took us a ways with no blood, but we called it off in the end.

These types of tracks I do are my favorite. A 500yd + track, where I don’t know of the shot placement and I’m second guessing and thinking the worse as far as finding it.

It wasnt to long into the line tho that I could tell Scout was picking the scent line apart. He was working diligently at a medium to slow pace, but just kept advancing the track. He showed us blood about I’d say every 40-50 ft.

Majority of the track was through and open hard woods area. Nearing the end Scout took into a much thicker area. I was watching his body language closely and I seen his head go up. I instantly knew the deer was close. He back tracked down the trail a little and running deer trails around and round quickly checking the thick area. I was right behind him and i seen his tail start wagging, to my relief we located the buck!

Nice buck glad we could help out and thanks Matt for backing me up in wolf country.

Calls have come to a halt by me with only one i did not take yesterday and one tonight I went to.

Tonight I got the call saying he was sure of a fatal shot and how he described it to me and the blood sign I was ok with taking it up a few hours after the shot.

He was right, it was fatal. Ended up being a high quartered away shot that hit back I’d say little high gut, high liver, and lungs.

The deer only went 135 yds or so. It hit something good. The hunter was not totally sure of the shot and got a little turned around on the blood trail. But, Scout was there to help. I never found one that I would call a “hanger”. How the deer ended up was kinda crazy. Good Boy Scout.

For those of you that read my posts and not just look at pictures…..remember back that I said I was gonna follow up on the track where we jumped the deer 30 hrs after the hunter had shot it.

Well well well…..what an ordeal I got myself into. Long story short kinda. I started scout in the other side of the highway where the deer had ran to the day before. This was a long shot being 58 hrs after the initial shot. Scout showed some interest right off the bat mainly cuz we were just out in the woods tracking. He did not by any means lock in to this. We were into the woods after circling for a bit and ended up going down a logging road. He takes me up maybe 50 yds and I’m looking for blood or anything hard not seeing anything. We came to a culvert with water and I seen him throw his head. This usually means he caught scent of something, I thought this is good. Lot of times scent will settle to low areas as in this case the creek. I looked in and it looked thick and nasty. But he continued up the rd for another 50 yds. He looked back at me and I asked you sure? He ran back towards me and pass me going back to the culvert but over shot it. This was me going out on a whim and seen a heavy trail so I almost encouraged him to check it. We get in to the thick stuff and i heard something moving thru double backing behind me. I didn’t think to much of but kept a mental note, Scout the works a bit in there and comes back to the logging rd. Discouraged I was like ok we will go back to the rd and restart one last time. He stopped on the way back and cut in. 20 yds later he slows way up and looking, up jumps the deer. I was like damn that was what I heard. He didn’t look very comfortable at all. A few more times of this in a short distance he had finally gave up. 58 hrs later we had the deer. These ones are tough but we didn’t give up and the deer did not goto waste.

Scout and I were very busy yesterday. We ended up tracking 5 different deer in total. When the day was done we had seen 4 out of the 5. Unfortunately we only have 2 on the tailgate for hunters. The second track of the day, we showed up 30 hrs after the hunters hit. We jumped this deer at the 750 yd mark laying in some cattails next to a busy highway. This one we will be following up after work today at around the 56 hr mark. I’m hoping Scout can lock into this and make a 3rd happy hunter. The first track of the day was by far the funnest, frustrating, and impressive track. After Scout lost the trail many times, I still don’t know why, I had to keep correcting him and bringing him back to the last blood I had seen. He would choose a different scent line everytime we came back which happened to be the RIGHT one lol. Very frustrating. Well lone behold after crossing multiple creek shoots we finally were standing over this deer 3/4 mile from the shot site and had expired on an island. Surrounded by water. The 3rd track had a clean arrow but decent blood. Hunter had a heard a loud smack. We jumped the deer 400 yds from the hit site and unfortunately I could see the front leg was in bad shape but the deer was moving just fine. He will live to see another day. The last track of the day after I was exhausted and didn’t want to go, specially after I was on the couch about ready to watch the packer game. I received a call from a young 78 year old hunter that needed our help. Scout struggled a bit again but it didn’t take to long and we recovered the young man’s trophy!! Glad we could help!

Finally made it home from Kansas. In the mean time Matt and Scout had a busy Saturday of tracking after calls had been on the slower side of things.

First track I understand Scout tracked to a property line and was locked in telling us this was a dead deer. After the adjoining landowner denied the hunter permission to get his deer they had to call it off.

Second track Scout tracked 900 yds total. Matt restarted him 3 times and took the same path everytime getting further but he eventually showed that he wasn’t interested anymore.

3rd track Scout took Matt to the deer but it was Alive and well. So they called that one.

4th track Finally success for team Scout and Matt. This hunter was feeling really anxious and was calling Matt often wondering when he would be there. The shot was gut shot maybe some more. But when locked instantly and went 450 yds to the deer it was still alive. Good thing Matt got the hunter to stay out because had he came earlier he most likely would have jumped it. Wait times are critical in recovering your deer. After Matt backed out with the dog the hunter got his deer. Glad we could help.

Scout and Matt went 2-2 this morning. Great job team and congratulations to the hunters.

As I am out in Kansas, Matt has been back home tracking with Scout. They have been coming up empty in there tracks lately. Matt was really happy and relieved to finally put one on the tailgate. I don’t know all the details except, they tracked it last night and jumped it. Came back this morning and jumped it a few more times. They finally backed out so the 9 year old hunter could get a finishing shot.

Congrats to the young lad that got his deer and also to Matt for sticking with the tracking even through the tough times.

Good Boy Scout!

Thanks to Dean Muthig for the referral!

What a day so far. This all started at about midnight last night when I went to track a deer that was minutes from my house. A young ladies first buck. After talking to the hunting party and seeing pictures of blood I decided to take the track up even though it had been shot last night. We got to the 450 yd mark and I found a bloody bed. 40 yds later Scout was next to the deer laying there. I called him off and we waited a bit, he just laid there so I figured he was hurt pretty bad. He then jumped up and ran away. I pursued the deer another few hundred yds to see the blood sign before running into property issues and back out.

A little before that I lined up another track for this evening. I woke up this morning to a referral from another tracker for another deer in the same area. Luckily I was granted off of work and we had a full day of tracking to do.

We found the referral deer this morning….after the hunting party had lost blood at the 150 yd mark last night, they needed Scouts help. This deer did a hard back track from a bed but Scout figured that out quickly. He then took the track to around the 500 yd mark and we had made another hunters day.

The track I had lined up for this evening, I called and said I would be there sooner. Great he said. We talked about it last night and he agreed to wait for me and not go looking. Lone be hold and this is a deer trackers biggest no no. I pulled in the driveway and called him. He gave me the run around about now the adjoining land owner where the deer went did not want a dog on his property. That was not true as i followed up with the land owner. So at that point I was in the driveway and he was looking for the deer. I don’t have a problem with that but call or text me and cancel the track. I was 30+ minutes from my house as they told me “we just found it”. I was not happy.

Decided at that point to get bunch of landowners permission for the early track from midnight last night and see if we could find that deer. I did just that and at we picked the track back up without the hunting party. We hit the 1 mile mark roughly and were going down a gravel road. Scout through his head up jumped the ditch and about 10 ft off the road in the cat tails up jumps the deer. I followed a little but called it off after I came to the conclusion the deer would live. Very impressed with Scout on that one. Was so far!

We have one more track for this evening lined up at this point and I’m hoping for a successful outcome.

I attached a blood picture from the late night deer we jumped twice. Goes to show how tough they are and how they can still clot up and make it.
