🔥 Quick Thinking Made a Big Difference 🔥
Recently, our crews responded to a vehicle fire that was threatening a nearby home. The fire began in a rear compartment of a work truck parked between two residences.
The vehicle owner noticed the fire, used a fire extinguisher while it was still small, and was able to move the truck away from the homes and into the street. By the time our crews arrived, the vehicle was burning with heat already beginning to damage the siding of the neighboring home.
His quick actions helped prevent what could have become a much more serious incident involving one—or potentially multiple—homes.
It’s a great reminder that a little preparation can make a BIG difference when seconds count:
🔥 Have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms throughout your home and test them regularly.
🧯 Keep a fire extinguisher accessible and, just as importantly, know how to use it before you need it. Remember PASS: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep.
🚪 Know when to get out. Fire extinguishers are intended for small, contained fires when you have a clear escape route. If a fire is growing, producing significant smoke, or you’re unsure you can safely extinguish it, get out and call 911.
🚗 Be aware of vehicles, grills, fire pits and other potential heat or fire sources near your home. Maintaining distance from structures can help prevent a small fire from becoming a structure fire.
Our crews were able to extinguish the remaining fire, check the neighboring residence for extension, and confirm that the fire had not spread inside the home.
Sometimes fire prevention is smoke alarms and safety plans. Sometimes it’s having the right equipment nearby and knowing what to do with it. Preparation matters—and in this case, it helped protect a neighbor’s home.
