🔥 : How Many Firefighters Does It Take to Fight a House Fire?

Have you ever wondered why so many firefighters and fire trucks respond to a house fire?

There isn't one simple number. Every fire is different, and the resources needed depend on the size and type of building, fire conditions, whether anyone may be trapped, nearby exposures and how the incident develops.

What may surprise you is just how many different jobs need to happen—often at the same time.

🔥 Fire Attack — Firefighters advance hose lines to locate and extinguish the fire.

🔎 Search & Rescue — Crews search the building for occupants who may still be inside.

💧 Water Supply & Pump Operations — Firefighters establish a reliable water supply and keep hose lines flowing.

🪜 Ladders & Ventilation — Crews provide additional ways in and out and may remove heat and smoke from the building.

🧯 Backup & Rapid Intervention — Additional firefighters support crews operating inside and are available if a firefighter becomes trapped, lost or injured.

🚑 Medical Support — Personnel are needed to care for injured occupants or firefighters.

📋 Incident Command & Accountability — Someone must coordinate the entire operation, track firefighters and resources, monitor changing conditions and determine what needs to happen next.

And that's only part of what can be happening at a working fire.

Roberts Park staffs nine personnel across our two stations each day. A significant structure fire can quickly require more firefighters than any single fire district could reasonably staff for every possible emergency.

That's where automatic and mutual aid come in.

Our neighboring fire departments respond to assist us when we need additional personnel and equipment—and Roberts Park does the same for them. Those additional engines, trucks and ambulances aren't simply duplicating what's already there. Their crews are filling the many different roles required to safely bring an incident under control.

So when you see several fire trucks from different communities at a house fire, remember:

It takes a team to fight a fire—and that team often extends well beyond one firehouse or one fire district.

Project Fire Buddies is a nonprofit organization that connects firefighters and first responders with children battling critical illnesses and their families. And this isn't just something happening somewhere else. Project Fire Buddies supports children and families right here in our local communities, including families served by our own Roberts Park firefighters.

🚒 Thank You for a Great Open House!

What a great day at Roberts Park! ☀️🚒

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our 2026 Fire Prevention Open House! We couldn’t have asked for better weather, and we loved seeing so many families and members of our community spending the afternoon with us.

Throughout the day, visitors had the opportunity to see a live fire demonstration and auto extrication demonstration, learn and practice Hands-Only CPR, tour the firehouse and apparatus, meet their Roberts Park firefighters, and learn more about fire and life safety.

And, of course, some of our youngest visitors put their skills to the test on the Junior Firefighter Obstacle Course — turnout gear and all! 👩‍🚒🧑‍🚒

A special thank you to our community partners Southwest Central Dispatch, ComEd, and 1-800-BOARDUP for joining us and helping make the day even better. We appreciate your continued partnership and your willingness to spend the day connecting with the residents we all serve.

Most importantly, thank you to our community for coming out! Events like this give us an opportunity to meet you outside of an emergency, answer questions, share a little about what we do, and help make our community safer.

We hope everyone had as much fun as we did, and we’re already looking forward to the next one! ❤️🚒

🔥 Taking Training to the Next Level

Firefighter/Paramedic Dave Shaw and Firefighter/EMT Ben Cain recently traveled to Oklahoma to participate in the qualification process for the Oklahoma Smoke Diver program, an advanced firefighter training program designed to challenge experienced firefighters both physically and mentally.

Earning a spot in the program starts well before the actual course. Candidates must complete a demanding qualification process that tests firefighter knowledge, physical fitness and job-specific skills — including pull-ups, pike pole pulls, a five-story stair climb with a hose pack, an equipment hoist, rescue drag and a 1.5-mile run.

Those selected to continue move on to an intensive six-day, 60-hour program focused on firefighter survival and rescue, advanced search, situational awareness, teamwork, leadership and critical decision-making under physically and mentally demanding conditions.

We’re proud of FF/PM Shaw and FF/EMT Cain for seeking out an opportunity to challenge themselves, sharpen their skills and represent Roberts Park alongside firefighters from across the country.

For our members, training doesn’t stop when the academy ends. Continuing to learn, improve and push their abilities helps prepare them for the moments when those skills matter most — right here at home.

We’ve been getting everything ready and can’t wait to welcome our community into the firehouse for an afternoon of fire safety, hands-on activities, demonstrations, and family fun!

👨‍🚒 Kids can complete their firefighter training on our Jr. Firefighter Obstacle Course, race our mini fire engines, explore the equipment our crews use every day, and earn their Jr. Roberts Park Firefighter for a Day certificate!

🔥 : Home Fires Have Changed

Did you know today's home fires can become dangerous much faster than fires did decades ago?

It's not necessarily because homes catch fire more easily—it's because what our homes are made of, what's inside them and how they're designed have changed.

🛋️ Modern furnishings burn differently.
Many older furnishings were made primarily from natural materials like cotton, wool and wood. Today's homes contain more synthetic materials and plastics—from upholstered furniture and mattresses to electronics and everyday household items. When these materials burn, they can produce tremendous heat and large amounts of toxic smoke very quickly.

🏠 Our homes are more open.
Open-concept floor plans mean fewer walls and doors separating rooms. While that's great for everyday living, during a fire it can give heat and smoke fewer barriers as they travel through the home.

🔥 Modern construction can behave differently in a fire.
Lightweight engineered building components are common in newer construction. When exposed to fire, some of these components can lose strength more quickly than traditional dimensional lumber, making rapidly changing fire conditions a concern for both occupants and firefighters.

☠️ And the smoke may be the greatest danger.
A house fire produces a mixture of toxic gases and particles. Smoke can quickly reduce visibility, disorient occupants and make escape difficult. You don't have to be anywhere near the flames for conditions to become life-threatening.

That's why early warning matters.

Working smoke alarms, a practiced home escape plan and knowing to get out and stay out can make all the difference. When your smoke alarm sounds, don't wait to see if conditions get worse—every second counts.
