The County of Maui invites residents to join in shared commitment to aloha, unity, peace and compassion at a Community Candlelight Vigil at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2026, on the Kalana O Maui front lawn at 200 S. High St. in Wailuku.

Mayor Richard Bissen, along with Veronica Mendoza, Maui nonprofit executive director, will speak at the vigil, which will include prayer and song. Battery-powered candles will be provided.

“In a moment marked by uncertainty and deeply felt concerns, this vigil offers our community a place to come together in peace,” said. “It is a reminder that aloha is not passive. It calls us to listen, to care for one another and to stand against division. We gather in recognition of our kuleana to care for one another. This is a moment to reaffirm our shared humanity and our commitment to treating every person with dignity and compassion.”

“The moment we are living in asks something of all of us,” said Mendoza of Roots Reborn, a multicultural immigrant justice and disaster response organization dedicated to supporting migrant and immigrant communities on Maui. “Our immigrant families are part of the fabric of Maui. They are not strangers. They are the people who nourish us, who work beside us, who love their children the way we love ours. They deserve to see their community rally around them. I invite every resident to join us on February 17, united in aloha.”

County of Maui Office of Recovery to hold special permitting workshop for commercial property owners

The County of Maui Office of Recovery invites commercial property owners who lost property in Lahaina during the 2023 Maui wildfires to attend a dedicated commercial permitting workshop on Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2026, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Morgado Hall at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului.

The workshop is designed to help business owners navigate the County’s permitting process and connect with key resources to support commercial rebuilding efforts.

“Rebuilding Lahaina means restoring both homes and livelihoods,” said Mayor Richard Bissen. “Ensuring our people have safe places to live has been foundational to our recovery, and at the same time, the return of local businesses is essential to the heart and economy of Lahaina. We are grateful to our business community for their patience and resilience, and we are committed to working alongside them to bring businesses, jobs and daily life back to Lahaina town.”

“The community’s input over the past several months has been absolutely essential in shaping how we move forward together,” County Office of Recovery Administrator John Smith said. “Because of that collaboration, we’ve been able to develop clear design guidelines and recovery directives that will help projects move through review more efficiently. This workshop is about putting those tools directly into the hands of business owners.”
