After a storm, one of the biggest obstacles to starting mitigation can be something most people take for granted: power. Damage to infrastructure can leave your property without reliable electricity just when extraction, drying and cleanup equipment is needed most.

Fire Prevention Week carries a little more weight on Kauai this year.

In the weeks since Hurricane Lowell, property owners have been dealing with damaged electrical systems, extended power outages, generators, temporary repairs and piles of storm debris. Those recovery conditions can introduce fire hazards that may not normally be present. Local officials are specifically reminding residents not to burn storm debris, to be cautious with activities that create sparks, and to use generators safely.

As recovery continues, take a few minutes to look around your property. Check extension cords and temporary power connections, keep generators safely away from structures, clear combustible debris, test smoke alarms and pay attention to electrical equipment that may have been exposed to water or storm damage.

Fire prevention isn't only about avoiding an open flame. After a major storm, it's also about recognizing the new hazards the storm may have left behind.

Kauai continues to recover from Hurricane Lowell. Power and essential services have returned to much of the island, but cleanup, repairs, and property restoration are still underway in areas that experienced significant storm damage. The County reported power has been restored to 95% of the island but there is still a lot of recovery work to do, particularly on the North Shore.
