The last surviving participant in the famous 1958 photograph, "A Great Day in Harlem," was Sonny Rollins, the legendary saxophonist and composer.
Rollins was one of the 57 jazz musicians who assembled in front of a brownstone at 17 East 126th Street in Harlem for photographer Art Kane’s shoot for Esquire magazine. The resulting image, published in January 1959, has since become one of the most iconic in jazz history.
When Rollins passed away on May 25, 2026, at the age of 95 in Woodstock, New York, he became the final living adult musician featured in the photograph. His death followed the passing of fellow saxophonist Benny Golson in 2024, leaving Rollins as the last surviving figure from that historic gathering.
Rollins reflected on the photo’s significance in a 2024 New York Times interview, noting that it “humanized a lot of the myth of what people thought jazz was” during a time when racism and segregation were pervasive. Today, with Rollins gone, the A Great Day in Harlem image stands as a poignant memorial to an era when jazz legends still gathered together on stage and in public life.
