An itinerary with a time control plan can make the difference between making your next objective, completing your itinerary for the day, or getting all your camp chores done.

“We feel humbled and grateful by the choice to serve made by the service members of our armed forces which is more then just service, more then sacrifice, more then dedication and more then most can relate to or even understand. Whether the term of service was short or long, risks great or small, the act of committing your will and your life to the defense of our great nation is no small choice. Thank you, we see you, and hope to be of some service in response upon your transition out of the military and onto your next steps!

Cooking is certainly one of the most rewarding skills to teach in the field. Sharing recipes, and creating community around enjoying food with one another. On an individual level, the ability to provide a beautiful and tasty meal is incredibly empowering, and the act of doing it day in day out in remote settings creates a level of consistence and self reliance that creates a level of pride that few other skills can do.

One of the great joys and challenges of guiding is contained in the interconnection between us and the dynamic nature of our environment. Weather is one of the most valuable aspects of that therapeutic, developmental, educational and recreational environment! Changing conditions make the work interesting fresh and stimulating and bond clients and staff together in shared experience; be it enjoyment or suffering. There are a wide variety of ways to stay apprised of the changing weather conditions but one of my favorite is weather tracking; following cloud formations, changes in wind speed and direction, temperature and rainfall. It’s one of the best ways to involve students in exercising their critical thinking skills and connect them to the ability to evaluate their hypothesis and respond to environmental pressures that affect them directly.

Often I meet outdoor guides that are hungry for more medical training and practice in addition to the 80hr Wilderness First Responder Course. They recognize the value in being able to care for their participants, maintain their health through strong preventative practices and the ongoing value in the relationship with their participants that medical care plays. There are a wide variety of skills and certifications that play an important role in the fabric of medical care in the outdoors that extend beyond that of a wilderness first responders certification which is quickly becoming the baseline barrier of entry for professional outdoor guides. Some of those certifications & skills include but aren’t limited to epinephrine administration, CPR, AED, oxygen administration, medication management, physical and psychological self care, ongoing wound management, environment specific medical care, search and rescue, etc. At the core of all of these skills and practices are an ongoing need to continue to review and practice the skills, all skills are perishable and the time to be practicing them and reviewing them isn’t when they’re necessary in the moment. Ongoing training and review at the organizational level is essential to support staff and their ongoing development.

Outdoor behavioral healthcare guides operate in a wide variety of environments year round from the coasts of Alaska to the deserts of Utah and onward to the tropical forests of Costa Rica. Part of ensuring quality care is through creating a safe environment in which participants can trust their staff to support them in meeting their basic needs; food water and shelter; baseline needs to promote their sense of self reliance. Shelter specifically plays an integral role in the human psyche, speaking to our desire for stability, insularity from the elements and at times each other, our sense of belonging and autonomy, our desire to create and express ourselves as individuals, and a chance to recharge and recenter the list goes on and on. OBH guides work with students to explore a variety of different approaches to building shelters and in turn students often develop a sense of comfort in the technical competence of their staff, often speaking to the way it inspires their own desire to deepen their connection to the natural world through those same outdoor skills. Finding creative depth and breadth in the approach to the seemingly simple acts of self care such as setting up a tarp is a key differentiator in the mastery of skills and the transition to tradecraft.

It’s only through practicing the very things we preach that we are able to maintain a grounded perspective. “Keep your hands in the dirt” it’s more then just staying busy, like with gardening we absorb insight, expose ourselves to new approaches across industries, locations, cultures, activities and in service to different types of clientele that are transferable and serve to inspire new approaches for our clients. The field of outdoor leadership is broad and interwoven :)

We are excited to be moving towards a greener future! It has been part of our development plan to continue to build a level of autonomy and resilience both systemic and individual into our daily lives and future plans. Next on the list will be shade cloth to reduce our energy needs and a more elegant rain water collection system to decrease our city based water dependence.
