The AFA's mission is an on-the-ground reality in the Allegheny National Forest, a world-class forest of tremendous regional, national and international beauty, interest and value. Forest Service has helped in the successful recovery of the ANF from the barren hills of the early 1900's, a result of the unregulated logging industry typical of that era. Today, sustainable forestry assures water and s

oil quality, protects endangered and unendangered wildlife and prevents tree disease, as well as provides for a diversity of the tree species and age classes. Communities, schools, businesses and citizenry near any national forest are also thankful to our earlier legislators who established the national forest system -- which in part was created to prevent such widespread harvesting and to assure a continued source of timber for the forest products industry. Under this law, Americans could look to a future of a completely renewable and recyclable resource for building material, paper, furniture, and fuel. The national forest system also provides for communities and school districts that host national forestland by returning 25% of all revenues earned annually. The loss of this revenue would adversely affect educational programs and municipal road improvements. In Northern Pennsylvania, thousands could lose their jobs should this resource no longer be available.

No, the Forest Service isn’t being dismantled. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Our mission continues, our teams remain dedicated, and our motto endures: “Caring for the Land and Serving People.”

We understand and appreciate the support from those who care about these lands as much as we do.

Here are the facts:
• We are moving headquarters west to Salt Lake City to be closer to the 90% of the lands we manage.
• We are shifting staff capacity out from behind desks and into the forests and districts that are desperately understaffed.
• No lands are being transferred or sold to states.
• State directors will be career employees, not political appointees.
• Our research programs and activities continue.
• Our forest and district offices remain unchanged.
• Our fire program remains unchanged.

Allegheny National Forest is planning prescribed fire operations this spring, estimated to begin between April 1 and May 15, as weather conditions allow.

Prescribed fire reduces wildfire risk and minimizes potential environmental, economic, and public health impacts.
