This is the “why” Candela was created. Otherwise, what person in their right mind would jump on this crazy train of starting your own business!? Each one of these “WHY’s” keep me motivated, passionate, grounded, and focused on the work. I appreciate organizations like The Mama Ladder who shine a light on us mamapreneurs who are balancing being self-employed while raising keiki. I hope to inspire more women in a similar position to have the courage and the confidence to find their “WHY” and for our community of wahine to lift them up the way others have done for me.

Strong, iconic brands need strong protections. 💪🏽

We love the story behind our client Hele Fitness, a Hawaiʻi-based functional fitness equipment company. In the Hawaiian language, the word ‘Hele’ means 'to move.' The company’s mission is inspired by Hawaiian culture — stories of the ancient Hawaiian Warriors Na Koa and the connectedness they had to the ‘āina and community. 🏋🏽‍♂️

In 2020, Hele Fitness was surely on the move, as it was recognized by Pacific Business News as Hawaiʻi’s No. 1 Fastest Growing Company. In the thick of the pandemic, the company saw explosive growth with the purchase of home gym equipment by the locked-down citizenry. 📈

As the brand grew and gained a reputation for high-quality products and cultural authenticity, so grew the need for protecting the brand and its logo. That same year, we successfully registered the company’s mark (logo) with the United States Patent & Trademark Office, which now gives Hele Fitness strong federal protections over the use of its iconic ‘mahiole’ logo and company name. Hele’s distribution continues to expand to the U.S. Mainland and internationally to countries like Brazil, South Korea, Japan, Guam, and more. 🌎

Proud to be a part of this number! and approached us at the beginning of 2021 with a vision to open a lei stand / speakeasy bar in Chinatown and asked us, “Where do we start?”

So began the journey, the agony, the ecstasy, a story that will be ripe in a few years for a motion picture feature. We ran the gamut of Candela’s offerings, from entity formation to leasing to investor onboarding to liquor licensing. Perhaps that’s why when Lei Stand officially opened in November 2022 - 22 months later - it hit different.

One of the most proud projects we’ve had the opportunity, nay, the honor to work on, meet . Come for the drinks, stay for the lei. 🌺🍹

This past December, we produced the third North Shore Global Summit for the Big Wave Risk Assessment Group. Since we began managing this incredible organization three years ago, we’ve seen BWRAG’s meteoric rise in the global surf community as the “gold standard” in surf / ocean safety education.

Two years of a global pandemic could not dampen its mission one bit. After producing two sold-out summits in Puerto Rico and San Diego just weeks before, we knew that we had bring the training back home to the North Shore.

Thanks to the unwavering support of and , we did just that. We had a sold-out Summit with lots of new faces, and plenty of familiar faces coming by to re-up their training.

We’re grateful to the BWRAG Leadership Brian Keaulana (), Kohl Christensen (), and Pat Chong Tim () for the opportunity to be part of this incredible work. Excited for what 2022 has in store!

As we look ahead to what the world of events will (hopefully) look like this year, we can't help but feel energized by the possibilities. 2020 was a year of wild uncertainty. But while it dished out plenty of challenges, it also gifted us with unexpected rewards. We were forced to do things differently... to think outside of the box (okay, way outside), to innovate, to pivot, to become more resilient, and to persevere.

Candela's had the honor of continuing her work with by taking its two largest professional development conferences - the Conference and Forum - entirely into the virtual space. Previously thought as an inconceivable feat, the conferences turned out to be great successes. For instance, last year's Wahine Forum was transformed into a three-day virtual event featuring over 70 amazing female speakers and mentors. On the eve of that event, Kira shared this reflection about what it meant to "pivot" such an important event:

It took countless hours, days, weeks, to pull it together, but we hope this year’s event will provide connection, inspiration, and empowerment to all you wahine mana out there! After six months of planning, scheduling, re-scheduling, filming, post-production, we’re super stoked to announce that the Big Wave Risk Assessment Group has released its first-ever Surf Responder Online Course.

After COVID hit, we helped this client pivot from a robust schedule of in-person trainings to distilling their course into a virtual format. Make no mistake, this was difficult work, but with a great team and an amazing network of partners and ambassadors, we brought this pipe dream to life. We hope all surfers around the world will benefit from this incredibly valuable life-saving knowledge and training from some of the world’s most respected big wave surfers, watermen, and waterwomen.
