3 Tips to Help You with Hobbies Right Now!

I am crazy about Organizing and decluttering, but my main motivation for these is to create more time to enjoy the things in life I love doing.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1. Define your hobbies. I recommend having three hobbies that you *actually work on* and enjoy doing. My three hobbies are scrapbooking, crocheting, and sewing. Hobbies are flexible and can/will change with time!!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2. Make space for your hobbies. Pick a space that only operates as your hobby space. It can be a room, a desk, a closet, or the great outdoors. materials can take over and prohibit you from actually doing your hobbies. With this in mind, look at your stuff and ask, “Does a hobby need the space it consumes? Or is it a fantasy that will never come true?” - Peter Walsh

3. Taking time for these hobbies is important. Once you have your space set up and your hobbies picked out, make time for yourself to enjoy what you do. Get off Instagram and go work on knitting a blanket, planting some flowers, or researching how to take better photos. Life moves quickly and it is important to schedule time for yourself to pursue what life has to offer outside of work.

What do I do as a professional organizer?

Celtic Casa specializes in Estate Cleanouts and Senior Downsizing, but we also offer a variety of other projects. I will be posting a more detailed look at what each of these projects entails, but a general reminder that each professional organizer is different and can help you with your various needs. What I love about this line of work is that each niche is so unique just like our clients. Some organizers love designing luxury closets, while others love tackling craft rooms. For some reason, I love love love sorting papers and mementos. Maybe it’s my love of history bubbling forth? Or my background as a teacher dealing with papers every day?

Most importantly, I love helping people gain control of a space and find peace in their lives with freedom from clutter.

I love exploring all the treasures hiding amidst the clutter. Like this old fashioned hair dryer!!

One of the best parts of organizing is re-meeting what you own. So often when working with clients, I hear them say: “I had no idea I had so many of these!” Or the classic, “I totally forgot I owned this!”
So many treasures lay hidden in your attics, basements, and storage rooms.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When organizing, it is helpful to consider what you own and if you are really valuing those items properly. Are they really important to you if they are just sitting in the back collecting dust? When is the last time you even saw the item?

When you pull out what you own and take stock of what you have, you can reanalyze if it is truly important to you, or if you just keep it because you haven’t had time to go through things in a while. Paper. so tiny, but when added up can take over! Some Qs to ask yourself to help sort paper:

1. If you can find it online, it goes out the door. Gone are the days when you need to keep every appliance manual you have ever received. If you google instructions for anything you have, you will find it online. I sorted a client’s house and she had over 200 manuals for various items in her home. They were all neatly labeled and organized together, but they took up half a bookshelf. The biggest kick, she never once looked at them again after that first organization.

2. Has the paper already served it’s purpose? This is an important question to ask about all of your items, but especially with paper. Is it a receipt you kept for budget? or a coupon you wanted to use, but forgot about and it actually expired 3 months ago? Or perhaps it’s a bill that you received for a doctor appointment that you already paid? If it has served it’s purpose, then you are free to get rid of it.

3. Am I keeping this out of guilt or a desire for a time in life that is over? Perhaps it is a box of letters from back in high school that your friends wrote to you on a retreat. maybe it’s a flyer for a concert you attended before kids and you like to reminisce. Or allll those notebooks and binders with notes from college that “I’m totally going to read again one day when I have time”

Life is short and life is precious. I am totally one for looking back at memories and cherishing them. However, when it comes to paper, I have seen how it can sneak in and take control before you realize it.

Start small. Maybe a box or two of papers hiding under your bed. Whatever the case, Toss it, recycle, or shred, GET IT OUT of your house and your life.

We’ve all heard of Spring cleaning… how about Spring organizing??

Getting organized is good for any time of year, but especially when the sun is coming out more and you can smell the plants in the air. You know Summer is fast approaching and being stuck inside getting rid of junk doesn’t quite sound appealing. Spring is the perfect time to declutter so you can enjoy and look forward to all that Summer brings.

Life is short and we use so much of our precious time searching for misplaced items or going through belongings from our friends and family that we have kept out of guilt or grief. We fall into the trap that if we keep items that once belonged to our grandmother or old BFF, we can bring back that person or keep them around for longer.

Grief hoarding is holding onto another person’s belongings as if we are able to hold onto that person. We fill our homes with items that we don’t actually want or use, but we keep with the hope that the memories will last longer.

Sentimental items are difficult to get rid of, but when they are tucked away in a drawer or stuffed into the attic, they do not receive the respect they deserve. When decluttering, ask yourself, am I holding onto this because I love it and display it properly? Or am I keeping it tucked in a random box because I miss my grandma, want to keep her memory alive, and feel guilty getting rid of it?

I am Moira, wife, mother of 1, and creator of Celtic Casa Home Organizing. I am passionate about Kansas City and all things organizing. We offer in home organizing services including closets, kitchens, basements, garages, offices, and craft rooms. We also specialize in efficient estate clean outs.

I would love to work with you in your organizing and I will gladly hold your hand through thick and thin. So much of organizing deals with listening to stories. Stories of your past, present, and untold stories about your future. My mission in starting Celtic Casa is to help you find peace in your home so that you can focus on the other wonderful things life has to offer.
