Four inches of American history.

That's approximately how long Abraham Lincoln's signature stretches across this 1862 presidential military appointment.

The document appointed Civil War surgeon R.B. Bontecou to the rank of Brigade Surgeon, and bears the additional signatures of Edwin Stanton and Lorenzo Thomas.

Dated February 21, 1862. The same week as the Union victory at Fort Donelson.

Included in the upcoming Kansas City Collections auction that starts late November.
