An engaged couple came to me with one big goal:

They wanted to make sure they were financially prepared for their wedding without putting their financial lives on hold just to pay for one day.

So instead of just picking a wedding number and calling it a day - I looked at their household as a whole and built a plan around the life they were preparing to build together.

Here are 3 things I helped them tackle before their wedding:

01. Created a wedding budget they could actually afford.

I looked at their income, current expenses, savings, and other financial goals to determine what they could comfortably spend on their Kansas City wedding without putting the rest of their financial lives on hold. The goal wasn't to create the cheapest wedding possible - but instead it was to create a wedding budget that actually fit their life.

02. Decided how they wanted to combine their finances.

Getting married means more than choosing a venue and signing a marriage certificate. I created a system for how they would manage money as a married couple. This included what would be shared, how they would contribute, and how they would handle their individual spending. There isn't one right way to combine finances - but there is a right system for your household.

03. Planned their financial lives AFTER the wedding.

I didn't want their financial plan to end when the wedding was paid for. I looked at what they wanted their money to accomplish next - savings, debt payoff, investing, future purchases, and their other shared goals - and made sure the wedding budget worked with those goals, not against them.

Your wedding is one day and your financial life together is everything that comes after it.

That's why I don't just help Kansas City couples create a wedding budget. I help engaged couples build a financial plan for the life they're actually getting married into.

A young couple came to me with one big goal:

They wanted to make sure they were financially prepared for their first baby.

So instead of just adding a “baby” category to their budget and calling it a day - we looked at their household as a whole and built a plan around the life they were preparing for.

Here are 3 things I helped them do to set their growing family up for financial success:

01. Increased their emergency fund.
Their emergency fund needed to grow with their family. I wanted them to have a stronger financial cushion to cover unexpected expenses now that another little person would be depending on them.

02. Opened a 529 for their baby.
I wanted them to start planning for their baby's future from day one by opening a 529, and even added it to their baby registry so friends and family could contribute toward their future instead of only gifting things their baby will eventually outgrow.

03. Reworked their entire budget.
I didn't just add baby expenses. I looked at their current spending habits and decided what still aligned with their priorities, what needed to change, and where their money could be redirected as they entered this new stage of life.

Because preparing financially for a baby isn't just about figuring out how much diapers cost. It's about making sure your household is financially prepared for the life you're about to build.

A glimpse into how I spent my 28th birthday this past weekend 🎂

The Hive was buzzing all weekend long - from Power & Light with my girls, to a birthday zoo day, all my favorite birthday freebies, dinner, ice cream, and of course … a cake made by one of my best friends. 💛

One of my favorite things about being a Household CFO is getting to practice what I preach in my own life.

I can enjoy the things I love, celebrate the people I love, and still be intentional with my money.

Because being good with your money doesn't mean saying no to everything fun. It means knowing what matters to you, planning for it, and giving yourself permission to enjoy it when the time comes.

And at 28 - I think that's something worth celebrating.

May this year be buzzing! 🐝

Stop letting “I should be farther along” steal the joy from how far you’ve already come.

We’re constantly taught to chase the next milestone - more saved, more invested, more paid off - that we forget to appreciate the small things quietly building our future.

There is beauty in the boring.

The $15 extra toward debt. The $50 invested this month. The 3% going toward retirement. The $1,000 sitting in savings.

And while those things may feel small - they are the building blocks of the life you say you want.
