Today's Lesson: Be The Thermostat
This is a repeat. Or a remix. Because I know I've shared this before. But I shared it for the first time with someone yesterday. It was a new concept to her. So it may be new to you, too.
Pictured below is a thermostat. We all have them in our homes. If it's hot outside, we cool down the house. If it's wintertime and cold outdoors, we want a warm and cozy home. That thermostat is responsible for making your home comfortable. It sets the tone.
A thermometer reacts to its circumstances. Stick a thermometer under your tongue and it should register 98.6. If it registers 104°, you need to be heading to the clinic.
The young lady I spoke with yesterday described her mood swings. And as we talked, I noticed her mood was heavily influenced by people and situations. She got upset when someone made a negative comment to her. When she shared the story with a co-worker, the co-worker's POSITIVE comments made her feel better.
But actually, it wasn't the co-worker. The co-worker's comments influenced her and she CHOSE to feel better.
No ONE can make us do anything. We CHOOSE.
That's why I always say: Be the THERMOSTAT, not the THERMOMETER.
Be consistent in your feelings, emotions, and thoughts. Set the tone in how you will be treated by and spoken to by others.
If someone's in a bad mood, don't let it affect you. YOU are the thermostat not the thermometer.
When you walk in the room, YOU set the tone. And if no one is on the same level as you are, they'll either adjust accordingly or leave the room...because they're uncomfortable with tone YOU'VE set.
Be blessed,
Carlton
