I grew up in the '70s. I remember being at the Mall at the movies and mom making sure I have enough change to call home before she dropped me and my friend off. I also remember my childhood sweetheart (now husband.), calling long distance from 30 miles away on our party line phone...LOL. I don't share this for any kind of hardship I experienced from this growing up, but I realize that my generation is one that grew up before communication became as easy as a nanosecond text.
I've been working closely with clients that are connected to slack in the workplace now 24/7, as well as my own experience over the last few years in corporate and consulting. I see the stress and frustration of constant to-do's, requests, and pressure for instant replies with "done". Here is a quick tip that I have been using for a few years now and it helps a lot:
💥PRIORITIZE BLOCKING TIME ON YOUR CALENDAR FOR YOU FIRST. Take a few minutes this Sunday to block open spots on your calendar for working time or personal time, close your slack or IM channel during this time, hold this sacred. Your heart and mind will thank you...and with less clutter, you might even find you get more done.
Finally, for those of you that don't remember or never had to use dimes to make a call or get hung up on by a parent that didn't want you to talk to their kid....enjoy Dr. Hook's song from 1972 Sylvia's Mother.
"Sylvia's mother says Sylvia's happy so why don't you leave her alone
And the operator says forty cents more for the next three minutes,....."
"Sylvia's Mother" was a 1972 single by Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show and the group's first hit song. It was written by Shel Silverstein and was highly success...
