Days before the Chiefs playoffs the team is already making history with a new fashion collection. The Chiefs x Cherry collection from Thalia Cherry of Cherry Co is the first of its kind to put a black, female designer from Kansas City on the national stage.

Cherry is a ScaleUP! Kansas City alumna who was in the third cohort of the program in 2016. ScaleUP! Kansas City is a no-cost program that helps participants get the skills, connections and perspective to scale their businesses.

Through ScaleUP! KC, Cherry said she learned “the value of diversifying your product line. With risk management, you will be able to identify new opportunities and weather storms.”

She was recognized as one of the Women Who Mean Business by the Kansas City Business Journal and among the 2020 Ebony Power 100. In addition, Cherry also was named one of the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce Top 10 Small Businesses of the Year and won the 2020 Diverse Small Business of the Year Award from the chamber.

“The ScaleUP! KC family has provided a safe space to take risks and learn from other entrepreneurs who are cheering alongside you,” Cherry said about her experience. “The coaches are extraordinary and honest in helping you shape business decisions and are an extension of your business family.”

“I still credit the ScaleUP! KC program for being instrumental in the scaling of Sage Restoration” said Cohort 1’s Stephanie Sage. “Since being in the program, we have been successful in expanding our contents cleaning division and adding on a textiles cleaning division, building a reconstruction division and increasing our work/revenues in the commercial sector. We have proudly become a complete turnkey full-service restoration contractor. These add-ons have enabled us to not only expand into a 25,000-square-foot facility but also primed us to scale our revenues and employ a larger number of people in the Kansas City area.”

Cohort 12’s Reda Ibrahim of RK Contractors said since ScaleUP! KC his business’s revenue in 2024 grew by 63% at the same percentage of overhead compared with 2023. The business’s five employees have grown to 12.

“As a small business, RK Contractors was very focused on action in construction to keep bringing in jobs not so much on identity development. ScaleUP! KC helped us learn how to put our story and identity into words, which is something that no one outside could have told us that we needed to focus on.

“ScaleUP! KC also helped leadership develop more structure in the business and streamline internal processes. This set the foundation for the growth we've undertaken since participating in the program. After participating, our leadership was able to better understand and navigate the market, understand what construction management is about, the financial aspect, how to run a business, how to delegate and create different procedures for construction."

Kansas City is a really intense program, but it covers everything you need to know about growing your business,” said Cohort 12 alum Brittany Fugate of Cenetric, Inc.. “It’s like an accelerated MBA. You learn everything you need to know to really scale your business: leadership, financial, sales/marketing — it covers all the bases.”

During ScaleUP! KC, Cenetric’s revenue doubled. In the year since Brittany completed the program, it’s doubled again. And her team has grown from about 10 employees to almost 30. In 2023, she won an Enterprising Women of the Year Award.
