The proliferation of cesspools is one of the biggest problems that we face in Hawai’i. They are destroying our reefs and impacting our freshwater resources. And because you can’t get a building permit if you have a cesspool and the cost of converting to septic can exceed $40k, they are a major impediment to solving our housing crisis.
But, there’s hope! Kaua’i County is offering $20k in grant funding for 100 households per year to upgrade to a septic; credit unions like Kaua’i Federal Credit Union are stepping up to the plate to provide low cost financing; organizations like WAI are providing technical support and resources; and Kaua’i based non-profits like the Hanalei Initiative are vigorously pursuing grant money to transition their communities away from cesspools.
Come hear from all of these hard working organizations and your Kaua’i legislators at a townhall on September 9th. Hope to see you there!
