In high-risk industries, creating a culture where employees feel empowered to speak up about safety concerns, often called “safety voice” — is quite critical to preventing incidents before they even happen. Research has shown that supportive leadership and giving frontline workers greater job control can significantly strengthen this safety voice, reducing risks and injuries across worksites.

Encouraging open communication, trust, and accountability helps ensure every worker plays an active role in keeping the jobsite safe. How does your organization promote safety voice among your own frontline teams?

Recent research reveals that 97% of U.S. workplaces remain vulnerable to health and safety risks, with nearly 9% facing particularly high danger levels — a clear signal that stronger risk management and proactive safety strategies are urgently needed.

Even as “zero risk” becomes a more common goal, only 3% of organizations report feeling truly prepared to handle HSE challenges. This gap points to the need for better data utilization, stronger safety systems, and a shift in mindset... from treating safety as simply a means to achieve "compliance" to recognizing it as the crucially valuable investment in the people on your frontline.

Building a culture of safety starts with empowering frontline workers, improving competency, and implementing smarter, data-driven risk management practices, through leading from the front!

Far too often, frontline workers receive safety and technical training only when they start a new job... and then are left to just simply try and figure things out on their own. True workforce development does not and must not stop during onboarding; instead it requires continuous competency assessments and performance-based evaluations to help workers consistently strengthen their own knowledge, skills, and abilities on the job.

Implementing these standards not only builds confidence and capability but also plays a crucial role in improving workplace safety across all manner of high-risk industries.

Offshore oil & gas safety remains a pressing challenge. While BSEE regulations set high standards, the reality on rigs often tells a different story... especially for many of the frontline contractors who carry out much of the work across this particular industry.

Injury rates among contractors are on the rise, highlighting the urgent need for stronger safety protocols and proactive competency development and skillset assessments.

A safer offshore workforce depends on equipping every worker with the skills and support they need to do the job safely, always.

The safety of oil rig operations in the U.S. is heavily dependent on a stringent regulatory framework, primarily enforced by the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE).

In the U.S., frontline roles still rely heavily on traditional “training” as the path to perceived competence... but training alone just isn’t enough. With retirements rapidly accelerating and workers entering the field, simply adding more training (even with new tech) won’t close the gap.

The U.S. military shows a more effetive and potentially better way: that is, effeciently pairing training with true competency assurance through ultilizing the proven-effective method of unbiased Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSA) assessments. This approach ensures workers can perform to the required standard, not simply get a check mark for attending another class or training seminar.

Isn’t it time America applied the same standard across our own entire frontline workforce?

There are plenty of things I’ll miss when I eventually leave the Army: the camaraderie, the sense of duty, and being part of something bigger than myself.

The U.S. Air Force is finding ever-increasing success with its enhanced Training & Competency Assessment program — which is built on the “Knowledge, Skills & Abilities” (KSA) model. By listening to what Airmen say they need most to succeed, the program strengthens both technical skills and personal development, preparing them for evolving challenges.

This approach is a strong reminder for industry: building competency programs that reflect frontline worker input is key to developing the next-gen workforce...

Gen-Z is bringing fresh perspectives and priorities to frontline jobs — often very different from past generations. This shift means companies must rethink how they develop, mentor, and prepare the next wave of leaders on the ground.

Adapting management strategies to align with these evolving values isn’t just about retention... it is instead all about building stronger, more future-ready teams. Is your own organization ready to lead with purpose for the workforce now?

The shifting priorities of Gen Z, combined with evolving corporate needs, require CFOs and hiring functions to adjust the way they engage the workforce of the future.
