BSC's thoughts and prayers are with those in the path of Hurricane Ian. While most concerns focus on wind speeds, damaging effects of a hurricane also include less obvious dangers such as flooding from rainfall and storm surge. In addition, once the storm passes, there are still challenges such as lack of power, potable water and waste services, as well as reduced emergency services/increased response times. If you find yourself in Ian's path, please be vigilant and follow your local officials' guidelines and recommendations. BSC would also like to recognize First Responders and their families for their sacrifice and duty, as they will remain on the front line through the storm event.

Raising more than the roof!

This house was down the street from our inspection. It is a two-story, brick veneer residence on a slab-on-grade foundation, with attached two-story garage, being lifted up another entire story. There were several of these types of homes being lifted in this neighborhood. This has been a recurring sight in more affluent areas that have been deemed flood prone since Hurricane Harvey.

BSC recently inspected a residence that exhibited significant differential foundation movement. The residence was founded on expansive clay soils, with a more than 20-year history of differential foundation movement and resultant distress. It was therefore no surprise when our expert Andrew N. Smith, PE discovered telltale rectangular concrete patches in the slab that confirmed historical (albeit unsuccessful) foundation repair attempts. What was not so expected was when he discovered expansion anchor sleeves and core patches in the slab, characteristic of historical interior soil sampling. This usually means an engineer was involved in a geotechnical study, although no one (including the homeowner) were aware of such a study...who was this unknown engineer???
