🔥 Fire Prevention Week 2026! 🚒

Last week, the Powder River Fire District had a blast celebrating Fire Prevention Week with the youth in our community!

PRFD members had the opportunity to visit Story Hour and Kaycee School, where we shared important lessons about structure and wildland fire prevention. From learning how to stay safe around fire to understanding ways to prevent fires before they start, we enjoyed spending time with our young community members!

Of course, Smokey Bear joined in on the fun, helping us spread the message that fire prevention is everyone’s responsibility!

A huge thank you to Kaycee School and Story Hour for welcoming us! We love having the opportunity to connect with our youth, share our knowledge, and hopefully inspire a few future firefighters along the way!

Fire prevention starts with education, and it’s never too early to learn! ❤️

🔥 Fire Prevention Week may be ending, but fire prevention never does.

This week we talked about safely charging devices, watching for damaged batteries, keeping charging devices away from combustible materials, and remembering the basics of home fire safety.

These are small habits—but they can prevent a devastating fire.

Powder River Fire District encourages everyone to take a few minutes today to look around your home, check your chargers and batteries, test your smoke alarms, and talk with your family about what to do in an emergency.

❤️ Thank you for helping us keep our community fire safe.

🚨 Don’t Forget the Basics!

Fire Prevention Week may have a special focus this year, but some of the most important fire safety habits never change.

🏠 Make sure you have working smoke alarms.
🔋 Test your alarms regularly.
🚪 Have a home escape plan.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Make sure everyone in your household knows two ways out.
📍 Choose a safe meeting place outside.

When a fire happens, you may only have a short time to safely escape.

Practice before you ever need the plan.

🔋 Take Care of Your Batteries

Lithium-ion batteries power many of the things we use every day, but damaged batteries can become dangerous.

Help keep them safe:

✅ Protect batteries from being crushed, punctured, or dropped.
✅ Keep devices out of extreme heat.
✅ Don’t use batteries that are swollen or damaged.
✅ Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use and charging.

Taking care of your batteries means taking care of your home and family.

🔥 Prevention is always easier than responding to a fire.

⚠️ Know the Warning Signs

Lithium-ion batteries can give you clues when something isn’t right.

Stop using a device or battery if you notice:

🔥 Unusual heat
🔥 Swelling or a change in shape
🔥 Strange odors
🔥 Leaking
🔥 Popping or unusual noises
🔥 Smoke

If a battery begins smoking or catches fire, move away from it and call 911.

Never ignore a battery that looks or acts differently than normal.

🔥 Give It Room to Charge

Your bed, couch, pillow, or blanket might seem like a convenient place to charge your phone or tablet—but soft surfaces can trap heat.

When charging devices:

✅ Place them on a hard, flat surface.
✅ Keep them away from bedding, clothing, paper, and other things that can burn.
✅ Make sure air can circulate around the device.

📱 Your phone may need a charge. Your pillow definitely doesn’t!

🔌 Use the Right Charger

Not every charger is created equal!

Using a charger that wasn’t designed for your device can damage the battery and increase the risk of overheating or fire.

✅ Use the charging equipment that came with your device or one recommended by the manufacturer.
✅ Replace damaged charging cords.
✅ Never force a charger into a device if it doesn’t fit properly.

A little attention while charging can make a big difference.

🔥 Charge safely. Prevent fires.

🔥 Fire Prevention Week is here! 🔥

October 4–10 is Fire Prevention Week, and this year’s theme is:

⚡ “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging is a Superpower™” ⚡

From phones and tablets to power tools, e-bikes, toys, and household devices, lithium-ion batteries are part of our everyday lives. Taking a few simple precautions when using and charging them can help prevent fires.

Throughout the week, Powder River Fire District will be sharing simple tips to help keep you, your family, and your home safe.

🔥 Fire prevention starts with all of us.
