The sphinx moth is a Federally Endangered species and is one of the largest insects endemic to Hawai'i with a wingspan measuring up to 5 inches (12 centimeters). It feeds on the nectar of night blooming plants including 'ilie'e (Plumbago zeylancia), maiapilo (Capparis sandwichiana), and koaliawa (lpomea indica). Caterpillars feed on plants in the nightshade family (Solanaceae), especially native trees in the genus Nothocestrum, but also on non-native solanaceous plants like to***co (Nicotiana tabacum), tree to***co (N. glaucum), tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum), and eggplants (Pseudomonas solanacearum). Though adults are short-lived, pupae can aestivate (go dormant) in the soil for up to a year if drought and dry spells persist.
Hope to see you there!!!
