What does a changing workforce mean for the Monadnock region and how can we prepare?

McKinsey’s latest article estimates that roughly 11 million U.S. workers may need to change occupations by 2035. Many more could see their current roles evolve as technology changes the skills employers need.

For MEDC, this reinforces the connection between workforce development and economic opportunity. Attracting and growing businesses must go hand in hand with helping local people access the jobs those businesses create.

A training program alone may not create a workable pathway. People also need to understand where it leads, what it costs, and whether they can complete it while earning a living. Building those pathways can help businesses find talent, help workers advance, and keep more opportunity here in the Monadnock region.

MGI estimates roughly 11 million US workers may need to switch occupations as AI reshapes the economy by 2035—yet only one in seven has a direct pathway.

Interesting piece yesterday in a Business Development magazine on New Market Tax Credits. While its great the applications are open again, the article misses an important near-term reality: CDEs that applied in the most recent allocation round still have not received their awards. Permanency provides critical long-term certainty, but it has not yet translated into new allocation authority or additional capital for projects currently trying to assemble financing.

Permanent authorization has removed a major source of uncertainty from the federal financing program.

MEDC attended the Jaffrey Selectboard meeting Wednesday evening as a subreceiptent of a Community Development Block Grant application to support the expansion of Monadnock Food Coop. This is a great example of a public-private partnership. We are pleased to share the application will be moving forward to the state.

The town of Jaffrey is applying for a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant to help outfit a new Monadnock Food Co-op grocery store location.
