Sticky Messages

We like our good ideas and important messages to stick in the minds of our audiences. We’d like them to be moved to action, or at least be better informed. Stickiness can cut both ways.
Some messages are sticky because they’re poorly worded and loaded with spelling and grammar errors. Those messages tend to stick around, undercutting our brands.

Messages that are written clearly, concisely, and accurately can also be sticky, but they’re powerhouses--working on behalf of businesses and nonprofits to polish their brands and increase visibility and credibility. What quality of messages do you want sticking around?

It may not be obvious, but this IS a good time to submit a news release when you do something newsworthy. One facet of the mission of many publications is to print business news, providing information their readers want and need. Publishers’ resources are stretched thin these days. If they receive a news release written concisely in the correct format (Associated Press) and error free, requiring little or no editing, they might just publish it! And the Chamber of Commerce you belong to may share your story as member news. If you don’t have the resources to write and submit your news release, hiring a freelance business writer may be a good investment.

National Friends of Libraries Week: October 20 – 26. Friends of Libraries raise awareness of the importance of literacy and raise funds for their public libraries.

My love of writing began with a love of reading, so I’m a Friend of the Keene Public Library. We have a Used Book Sale at the Library on Friday, October 18 (9 a.m. to 6 p.m.), Saturday, October 19 (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and Sunday, October 20 (9 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.). Books are typically priced from between $1.00 to $3.00.

Public libraries are valuable community resources, offering books, DVDs, and other resources to borrow at no cost, and programs that benefit both the individual and the family. If you’re looking for a place to volunteer—get involved at your public library!
