Gratitude is the act of feeling and communicating appreciation for the people, circumstances and material possessions in our lives. The Spirit of Thanksgiving is celebrating the harvest and blessings of the previous year with a heart full of gratitude. Grateful people experience the calmness, serenity, peace, and joy because they appreciate what they have without being too much worried about what they do not have.

Prior to COVID, online auctions for self-storage had been slowly growing for at least the past six years. Online storage auctions are thought to have made an appearance sometime in the early 2010s.

Some self-storage operators, however, have been slow to adopt the newer technology. “There’s a ton of operators who haven’t changed from live to online,” says Peter Allen, president of Charlotte, N.C.-based Lockerfox, an online platform that facilitates 10s of thousands of online auctions per year.

Lonnie Bickford, CEO and president of StorageAuctions.com, a Baton Rouge, La., firm that markets online auctions and sold approximately $6 million in goods in 5,000 auctions last year, notes that smaller operators, especially if they’ve been in the business a long time, are known to evolve their businesses at a slower pace. “Self-storage owners don’t like people telling them what to do,” says Bickford. “They don’t like change, even if it’s something best for them.”

Online auctions are not only the wave of the future but the wave of the present, given the circumstances with the pandemic. “If ever an owner-operator needed a reason to start doing online auctions, you have one now,” says Allen. “If you still are having a crowd of people showing up to your facility, there’s a better way.” MSM Weekly

In a world of diversity, this season is enjoyed by so many people, but truthfully in many different ways. As you enjoy your holiday in a quiet place enjoying some well needed rest, or with a large group of friends and family, we hope you will accept our blessings and well wishes with each of you. For us our kids will not be here Christmas Day. We will enjoy Christmas Eve with a small number of family members and Christmas Day will be the quiet day I just spoke of. However, between the 27th and Jan 3, the masses will arrive. The kids, extended family, friends that are being drug along will easily break every social distancing policy on the books today. And we are just fine with that. The holidays are meant to be spent with friends and family.

For the most part, 2020 has been a miserable year. However, our little company has been blessed. We have seen record numbers in Occupancy and Revenue. We have added more clients and stores and we have seen a variety of facilities sold based on strong numbers. We have added more employees that we hope will consider us family, and we will add more properties next year. Candice and I have taken the approach that we have work to do. We did it this year and expect to continue into this next year doing the same.

This year we purchased our "Forever" home. When you see it, you will understand why. The length of time to purchase and the considerable time we have spent in repairs, adjustments, remodeling etc has literally occupied my mind, my time, my energy this past year. Candice has simply endured me, and our staff, including Tocarro, Lanna, Clara, Calvin, Karlee, & Lauren have picked up a heavy portion of the load. Likely unfair, but endlessly appreciated.

We sincerely hope that everyone will accept our Love and Appreciation. We are so grateful with how everyone we come in contact impacts our lives. Some with smiles and some with frowns, but each are accepted none-the-less. May your holiday season be what you are seeking and deserve as you prepare for the New Year.

As previously demonstrated in 2008, self storage can weather a recession better than many other real estate assets. The characteristics strengths of this industry can continue to be relied upon to tackle the current challenges. Self storage is a resilient asset in part because its revenue is dependent on a large pool of customers. As this revenue is spread out, so is the risk.

How has the storage business for us been affected by COVID?
..... It has not. Before storage was officially ruled an essential business, we knew we had a job to secure customer valuables. We also knew that we have customers that access their units everyday, including essential workers. We have had to make adjustments to our properties depending on which state they are in, but it went smoothly. Donald Jones Consulting, working with owners, were able to keep all of our fabulous managers paid. Most properties have seen an increase in occupancy during the pandemic. We want to thank all of our managers and DJCS staff for all the hard work put in to keeping people safe during this time. All stores are sanitized, masks are worn, and social distancing is encouraged. Donald and I have continued to travel, work on feasability studies all over the country, and took over management of four properties. People still want to buy and build because of storage's resilience.
