A whole lot to unpack here from a training standpoint...
First- mindset... No, wait, MINDSET! Church safety teams (and armed security officers) are armed for a reason! Yes, customer service is important and making people "feel" safer is important but at the end of the day, the primary job of armed security is to have the skills, tools and mindset to direct lethal force at a lethal threat. I'm literally stunned watching this video of Houston police officers hiding in the face of an active shooter threat. Uvalde taught us that "tactical staging" as a response tactic is utterly dead, buried, and decomposed beyond recognition. If you're an armed professional and your plan is to "run, hide, fight", you owe it to your community to find another line of work..
Marksmanship- I hate Monday Morning Quarterbacking but, as I understand it, these officers fired over 100 rounds and hit the unnamed POS with 5 of them... even in a large indoor venue like Lakewood, that's unacceptable. I saw a red dot mounted to the top of one officer's weapon- that little red dot makes it *easier* to shoot long distances-if you put in the work to get it that way. Let's move beyond carrying "emotional support pistols" and develop fighting skill with them.
Gunhandling-At one point in John's video here, there's an officer running around with her FINGER ON THE TRIGGER. Let's practice safe gunhandling until we simply can't get it wrong under pressure. I'm sure shooting the bad guy will win you tons of brownie points, shooting your partner in the back as you're rolling to the scene, probably less so.
