Healthy Aging Tip #5: Keep In Touch with Friends and Family

Social connection is one of the most powerful tools for healthy aging, and it is easy to let it slip. Reach out to a friend, neighbor, or family member you have not spoken to recently. A short conversation can lift both of your days.

Healthy Aging Tip #4: Secure Your Home

Falls are one of the most common and most preventable risks for older adults at home. Secure loose rugs, add nightlights along hallways, install grab bars in the bathroom, and keep walkways clear. Small changes make a real difference in safety and confidence.

💜 WHO’S BEHIND THE CARE?

Sometimes your “why” starts long before your job does.

For Bianca, caring for others didn’t begin when she joined Senior Helpers.

❤️ It began with family.

Bianca spent much of her life supporting and caring for family members. Through those experiences, she learned firsthand how important it is to have someone beside you when life and healthcare become difficult.

Today, that experience continues to inspire the work she does at Senior Helpers.

One thing Bianca especially enjoys is helping seniors and families when they’re struggling to understand things that can feel overwhelming, including insurance and navigating the details of getting the help they need.

For Bianca, it’s more than completing a task.

💜 It’s being the person who helps make something difficult a little easier.

And that is one of the many reasons we're grateful to have Bianca behind the care at Senior Helpers.

👇 Has someone ever helped you navigate something complicated when you were caring for yourself or a loved one? Sometimes having the right person in your corner makes all the difference.

Healthy Aging Tip #3: Eat the Rainbow

Healthy eating does not have to be complicated. Focus on variety, especially colorful fruits and vegetables that cover a wide range of nutrients. Rotate what is on your plate every few weeks and pair it with whole grains, lean protein, and low-fat dairy.

💜 When another healthcare professional trusts your team, it means something special.

We are incredibly grateful for this review from a local hospice nurse who has had the opportunity to work alongside our Senior Helpers team:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“As a RN who has had the opportunity to work closely with the team at Senior Helpers I would not hesitate to refer my patients and families to them for care. I have found them to be nothing but passionate, professional and loving in all the exchanges I have had with their staff. Their care for their clients and families is probably unmatched in the Tri-Cities.”

Thank you for your trust and recommendation. 💜

Providing great care takes a team. We value the relationships we build with nurses, hospice teams, physicians, therapists, and other healthcare professionals who work alongside us to support seniors and their families.

For our team, being described as passionate, professional, and loving is one of the greatest compliments we could receive. Those are the qualities we want families to experience every day.

Looking for compassionate support for someone you love? We’re here to help.

Healthy Aging Tip #2: Stay Hydrated

As we age, the body's natural thirst signal becomes less reliable, which makes it easier to become dehydrated without realizing it. Keep a water bottle within reach throughout the day. Add fruit for flavor, or set a reminder if that helps.

💜 Caregiver Tip Tuesday: What Should I Do When They Refuse Help?

You know they need help.

They insist they don't.

Sound familiar?

When someone living with dementia refuses to get dressed, take medication, eat, bathe, or accept help with daily tasks, it can be frustrating for everyone involved.

But resistance isn't always about being difficult or stubborn. There may be a reason behind the “no.”

They may be confused about what's happening, frightened, uncomfortable, embarrassed, in pain, or simply trying to maintain a sense of independence.

Instead of pushing harder, try changing the approach.

💜 Avoid arguing or forcing.
Pushing the issue can increase fear, frustration, and resistance.

💜 Offer two simple choices.
“Would you like your blue shirt or your green shirt?” gives them some control without overwhelming them.

💜 Explain instead of command.
Try “Let's get ready for breakfast” rather than “You need to get dressed.”

💜 Look for what may be behind the refusal.
Could they be tired? Cold? In pain? Afraid? Confused about what you're asking?

💜 Step away and try again later.
Sometimes 10 or 15 minutes, a different caregiver, or simply a different approach can completely change the response.

And remember: the goal isn't to win the argument. It's to help your loved one feel safe, respected, and supported.

Sometimes changing the approach changes the answer. 💜
