DARK HORSE DECONSTRUCTION IN THE NEWS ♻️

What if a building scheduled for removal could offer more than just a cleared site?

Spectrum News 1 recently visited one of our Wisconsin projects to take a closer look at how deconstruction gives usable building materials a second life.

Instead of breaking everything down at once, our crews carefully dismantle buildings piece by piece, salvaging materials such as doors, windows, cabinets, countertops, appliances and fixtures for reuse. Materials that can’t be reused may be recycled instead of automatically becoming landfill waste.

According to our Director of Operations, Cole Alsbach, Dark Horse typically recovers 85–95% of building materials from the projects we deconstruct.

We’re proud to see more attention being given to the value that already exists inside our buildings — and to the people and processes working to keep those materials in circulation.

The building may come down.
The materials don’t have to.

Here, our crew is collecting insulation for responsible disposal rather than sending it to a landfill.

Tight growth rings can tell us about a tree that grew slowly over decades — and the material can continue serving a purpose long after its first life in a structure comes to an end.

THIS FLOOR HAS A STORY.

Once part of the former Flexsteel facility in Dubuque, Iowa, this beautiful Southern Yellow Pine flooring was recovered during the building’s deconstruction.

Instead of being crushed, hauled away, and buried in a landfill, the material was carefully salvaged and given the opportunity to become something new.

And that’s exactly what happened.

The flooring eventually found its way to people who saw its potential — transforming material from a former commercial building into something with a completely different purpose.

This is one of the most rewarding parts of deconstruction: seeing where materials go next.

Old buildings can hold an incredible amount of value. Lumber, flooring, fixtures, architectural elements and other materials can become part of a new floor, a piece of furniture, a home, or something entirely unexpected.

Because sometimes, the best new materials are the ones that already have a story.

FROM ONE PROJECT TO A COMPLETELY NEW PURPOSE.

These large timbers were recovered from a warehouse we deconstructed in Chicago. Rather than becoming part of the waste stream, they were carefully salvaged and later repurposed along the Mississippi River in Wisconsin to create a scenic overlook for a client.

It’s a great example of where material recovery can lead — taking something that has already served one purpose and finding a way for it to contribute to something completely new.

From a warehouse in Chicago to a waterfront in Wisconsin, these timbers traveled a different path than demolition waste.

The next chapter of a material doesn’t always start with something new. Sometimes, it starts with what we choose to save.
