At Tailwinds, every raptor is cherished.

A red-tailed hawk, barred owl, screech owl, great horned owl, and turkey vulture each have a permanent home in New Hampshire, where they are safe, cared for, and able to inspire others through their stories.

These birds cannot return to the wild, but they still have so much to give. Through them, people of all ages learn to appreciate wildlife, respect nature, and understand the quiet beauty of second chances.

Your donation helps provide lifelong care for these remarkable birds and supports the educational work that brings their stories to life.

Tailwinds is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. EIN: 41-2654421.

Tim was hanging out on his perch, and decided he really wanted to sit next to this patch of flowers. Both birds and humans are enjoying the warmer sunny weather☀️

He’s just a single dad, trying his best.

Tim has been working overtime caring for his “baby” (aka owl stuffy). He takes it in the bath pan, carries it around with him, and even tucks it into bed, all the way in the back corner, making a little nest of pine needles around it.

He also “helps” us with mew maintenance, taking it upon himself to supervise us from the step ladder. We reminded him that he has other perches, and wings he can use to reach them.

One of a turkey vulture’s defenses is that they are capable of projectile vomiting up to 10 feet. The strong acidity of their stomach acid, combined with the stench of their food can be an effective deterrent for something that’s threatening them. For Greta, she will tend to vomit if we try to handle her after she eats. For this reason, we hold off on feeding her before programs. The risk of her puking on me here is minimal.

BUT…

Lionel our screech owl, does what we call an ‘aerial launch’. The minute he takes off, he lets loose the foulest smelling poo, and does it in such a way that he flings it everywhere. We can’t predict when it will happen, but the risk of getting caught in one of his stink bombs is always present once you step into his enclosure.
