4:44 pm Internet has been restored. Customers will receive a credit on their next bill 12:23 pm update: repairs are now expected to take until 5pm AK time. Repairs are in a very remote area and additional equipment was needed. 11:13am update: repairs in Canada are expected to be completed by 2pm. KPU intends to issue a credit to internet customers on the next bill. 10:10am update: fiber cut was vandals cutting and stealing fiber cable to sell because they thought it was copper. It was not. It’s glass. Repairs are underway and expected to be completed early afternoon. 6:20 am update: fiber cut was identified in the area of Fraser lake between Prince Rupert and Prince George. Crews en route. Original post: KPU engineers became aware of a drop in internet at 2:20am Monday morning. They immediately contacted our downstream provider in Canada. Telus has acknowledged an equipment issue and is actively investigating. We will update as we know more.

KPU Telecom is a member of the Foundation for Rural Service and NTCA. This means that students in our Ketchikan community are eligible for scholarships through FRS, and there are technical grants available to local organizations. All of us at KPU are so proud to announce that our own Kayhi 2026 graduate Lilly Pader was one of the few students selected out of 2000 applicants for a scholarship. Lilly will receive a $5,000 scholarship from FRS for her studies next year!

Many people now use Microsoft 365, Google Drive or Google Mail. There is a new phishing campaign that uses several legitimate Google sites to ultimately steal your log-in credentials for Microsoft 365. The initial links are legitimately Google, but you end up at a fake Microsoft site with a log-in that looks familiar, but is not actually Microsoft.
How can you protect yourself?
Recipients of these emails must be skeptical of any email they receive. Spotting phishing emails or links relies on the user to check the actual URL or web address they are going to.
Always check the actual web address of any login page; if it’s not a genuine Microsoft domain, do not enter credentials. Using a password manager will help because they will not auto-fill your details on fake websites.
Be cautious of “urgent” emails about voicemails, document shares, or permissions, even if they appear to come from Google or Microsoft. Creating urgency is a common tactic by scammers and phishers.
Go directly to the service whenever possible. Instead of clicking links in emails, open OneDrive, Teams, or Outlook using your normal bookmark or app.
Use multi‑factor authentication (MFA) that forces you to provide a code, or that requires you to use an authenticator app. This way stolen passwords alone are not enough to let scammers gain access to your account. Also regularly review which apps have access to your account and remove anything you don’t recognize.

Another well-crafted phishing campaign uses Google Cloud Integration Application infrastructure to bypass email filters.
