These scores are valuable tools for understanding a child's learning journey and identifying their strengths. These scores are important and can help you understand your students' strengths and the areas where you need to focus. So, we are still talking about how to make your child feel more confident when it's reading time. Try reading aloud together: Shared reading time allows your child to hear how it should sound which helps them learn fluent reading, it will improve their pronunciation, and they can practice in a low-pressure setting. Take turns reading paragraphs or sentences. They will start to feel more confident and you will notice that they will start volunteering more to read in school.

Yesterday, we discussed strategies for fostering confidence in readers of all ages. We explored the idea of making books more engaging by bringing them to life (see yesterday's post for ideas). Today, we will focus on creating a judgment-free environment, which is essential for helping children overcome their fear of being ridiculed for mispronouncing words. One approach is to establish a safe space where children feel comfortable taking risks, learning from their mistakes, and receiving constructive feedback rather than harsh criticism. This is crucial. To achieve this, you may consider reading a passage first and having your child follow along, then allowing them to read it themselves, thereby providing a model for correct pronunciation.

In our previous discussion, we explored the challenges of developing a love for reading in children of all ages, often resulting in students who lack confidence in their reading abilities. Today, we aim to provide solutions to enhance your student's reading confidence. An effective method is to transform reading into a fun, interactive experience. Begin by selecting a favorite childhood book, such as Pete the Cat, and attempt to read it in a voice that brings the character to life. The incorporation of rhyming words can also contribute to a more engaging experience. If inspiration is needed, explore YouTube's Read Aloud videos, which showcase the engaging techniques employed by readers. Observe how they utilize creative voices and sound effects to bring stories to life. You can then practice using your own expressive voices and sound effects. For older children, consider incorporating storytelling or role-playing to create a more immersive reading experience.

So, when I work with my students, I let them know reading is more than sounding out letters and blending sounds to form words (you might also hear the term decoding). It means understanding what you read, being able to engage with the stories(making connections). So, while I would love for all my kiddos to be like me (a known bookaholic), what I really want is for them to feel confident in their reading abilities, because with this confidence, their overall academic performance will be positively impacted, and they will achieve overall academic success.
