June Business of the Month: Cairo Grain Inspection Agency

Congrats to Cairo Grain! They have always been great supporters of the Chamber, and many other initiatives around Ballard County and the river region. This business has been in operation for almost 100 years with different owners and names, but we are so glad that they chose Wickliffe as their home!

"The Cairo Board of Trade first opened in Cairo, IL in the 1930's and had a full grain inspection department. The Board of Trade closed in the late 1940's, and Mr. Abreded bought the grain inspection department.

Woods and Tenant acquired the inspection department around 1955. J.R. Simpson worked for Woods and Tenant, and when they decided to sell, Mr. Simpson bought it in 1965. He changed the name to Cairo Grain Inspection Agency.

Mr. Simpson and my dad, Robert, came to an agreement on my purchase of CGIA in 1979 and incorporated the business in 1980. My dad passed in 2014, and I took over the business. In October 2020, I moved our office to Wickliffe, KY. I plan on retiring June 30th of this year, and Josh Basham will become the manager for the new owners, North Dakota Grain Inspection.

We have 20 part-time employees that work as our DT samplers and weighers, and 3 full-time inspectors. I am so thankful for my employees and their commitment to the job.

We provide grain inspection to elevators in Kentucky, Illinois, Tennessee, and Missouri. We inspect the grain in barges that are headed to the Gulf, and prove a certificate of the quality of the grain to be sold. It is a very unique business that nobody ever knows about that helps keep the quality of our food supply the best in the world!" -Keith Fronabarger, Manager

Ballard County is glad to have Cairo Grain, and excited for Josh to take over at the end of the month. We have so many unique businesses in our county. Congrats!

In lieu of ribbon cutting, we are excited to welcome Hooked on Cats as a member!

Hooked on Cats is a guided fishing service on the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers in Wickliffe. Capt. Terry, said he targets the larger, trophy size catfish. They provide all bait tackle and equipment needed. All anyone needs to show up with is a valid Kentucky fishing license for that day and something to eat/drink for lunch. They have everything else covered and bottled water is readily available for free. Check out their Youtube channel too: https://www.youtube.com/

May Business of the Month: A Signature Look Nail Salon

Congrats to Amy! This nail salon in La Center is keeping all of our nails looking fresh and ready to go. She is always booked, which is a good problem! But if you haven't let her pamper you, you for sure should! Or, get a gift card for someone for Mother's Day!

"I've been a nail technician for 24 years. I spent 21 years in Lone Oak, and the last 3 here in La Center. In December of 2022, I decided to move closer to home, and officially opened the salon on March 23rd, 2023. It was a bit of a leap of faith, but I am so happy I took the plunge.

The community has been incredibly supportive, with my loyal clients and all the new ones I have welcomed. I'm super busy, which is a wonderful problem to have! I'm so grateful to all my past clients and to Ballard County for their support."
