CALL FOR ACTION: You can support community composting in Kew Gardens and citywide by writing to the City Council committee that oversees this. Please read the following from our friends at Big Reuse and please consider writing a short messsage to the Council so they will maintain funding in the forthcoming budget. Thank you---The KG FSDO Team

From Big Reuse:
This Monday, March 16, City Council will be holding a budget hearing on sanitation and solid waste management at 250 Broadway in Manhattan. The hearing will start at 10:30AM, with public testimony beginning at 12:00PM.

If you're passionate about keeping community composting programs accessible across New York City to make for a more resilient future amidst climate change, we encourage you to provide in-person or virtual testimony by registering here! You can also submit a written testimony up to 72 hours after the hearing via [email protected]. To get you started, we've created a template that can be adapted for written or day-of testimony.

Please send the email to: [email protected].

-----------------------------------------TEMPLATE____

Chair Sanchez and members of the Committee,

Hello,

I am writing to strongly support ongoing, stable funding for community composting. I am a regular weekly contributor with a community composting program in Kew Gardens that is run by volunteers and supported by the Queens Botanical Garden.

Community composting is a proven climate solution. It reduces landfill waste, lowers emissions, enriches our city’s soil, and strengthens our resilience. We’ve seen how the City Council can be part of that change, and we appreciate the support it’s been given in the past.

This isn’t just about compost; it’s about investing in a better future for all New Yorkers because supporting organic compost is just one part of the process that enriches our community through organic gardening, compost teaching programs along with awareness and community food support programs. I urge the Council to continue to fund community composting.

Thank you,

You are invited to a COMPOST GIVEBACK and COUNTERTOP FOODSCRAP CONTAINER GIVEAWAY this coming Sunday, March 1, in the KG Cinemas Park. The compost is processed by Queens Botanical Garden from the food scraps you bring us week after week and from other community composting sites. It comes to us loose in large bags, so you might want to bring a vessel or container. (We will have lunch bags.) The handy containers are while supply lasts. This is our thank you for supporting community composting. Hoping to see you 10am to 1pm.
