Taking a closer look at Spot Colors

Spot colors are pre-mixed inks used in printing to achieve precise and consistent color results. Instead of blending multiple inks like process color printing (CMYK), spot colors are printed using a single, dedicated ink.

This is especially helpful for things like brand logos and specific corporate colors, where consistency is important across every print run.

Using spot colors can also allow for specialty inks, such as metallic or fluorescent colors, that can’t be created with standard CMYK printing.

Here are some tips;

1. Use Spot Colors for Brand Accuracy
If your logo or brand has a specific color, using a spot color (Pantone) ensures it prints consistently every time.

2. Spot Colors Are Great for Simple Designs
Designs with 1–3 colors are perfect for spot color printing and often print cleaner than full CMYK builds.

3. Avoid Converting Spot Colors to CMYK
If a design is meant to use spot colors, converting it to CMYK can change how the color looks.

4. Name Spot Colors Correctly
In design software, make sure the color is labeled correctly (ex: Pantone 186 C) so the printer knows it’s a spot color.

5. Spot Colors Print Solid
Unlike CMYK which uses tiny dots, spot colors print as solid ink, which can make logos and graphics look sharper.

6. Check Your File Before Sending
Make sure the spot colors are set as spot colors in the file, not just visually similar colors.

7. Spot Colors Work Well for Specialty Inks
Metallics, fluorescents, and specialty colors are usually printed as spot colors.

✨FAQ Friday

Do you keep my files on record?

Yes! We do keep customer files on record for repeat orders. However, the easiest and fastest way to reorder is usually to send the file again when placing your order. This helps us avoid digging through older files and ensures we’re printing the most updated version of your design.

If you’re uncertain whether you still have the file, just reach out and we’ll be happy to help!

❓ FAQ Friday

“Why does my print look different than my design on my screen?”

This is one of the most common questions we get! The short answer: screens and printers produce color very differently.

Digital screens use RGB (red, green, blue) light to create color, which is why designs often appear brighter and more vibrant. Printing uses CMYK inks (cyan, magenta, yellow, black), which naturally produces slightly different tones.

A few other things can affect how color appears:

✔ Screen brightness settings
✔ Paper or material type
✔ Ink absorption
✔ Finish (matte vs gloss)
✔ Lighting where the print is viewed

For the most accurate results, we recommend designing in CMYK color mode and providing high-quality files whenever possible.

If color is especially important for your project, let us know before printing - we’re always happy to review files and talk through expectations so there are no surprises.

🎨 Print Tip: Spot Color vs. Process Color

Not all colors are printed the same way! Understanding the difference between spot color and process color can help you get the results you expect.

Spot Color uses a pre-mixed ink created to match a specific color exactly - often from the Pantone Matching System (PMS). This is the best choice when brand consistency matters, especially for logos or designs that require precise color matching.

Process Color (CMYK) blends four inks - cyan, magenta, yellow, and black - to create a wide range of colors. It’s ideal for full-color designs like photos, gradients, and detailed graphics. This is preferred for printing since items are printed in cmyk.

🔎 So which should you choose?
• Use spot color when color accuracy is critical.
• Use process color when your design includes multiple colors or images.

If you’re unsure which option your project needs, we’re always happy to help guide you before printing.

❓ FAQ Friday

“Can you match brand colors exactly?”

We do our best to get colors as close as possible, but print and screens display color very differently. Final color can also vary based on the material, ink, and printing process.

For the best color accuracy, files should be designed correctly and set up in CMYK color mode. Sending approved brand files CMYK values also helps us achieve the closest match possible.

If a file needs color adjustments, conversions, or design fixes to improve accuracy, we’re happy to help - just note that a design fee may apply depending on the changes needed.

If color accuracy is critical for your project, let us know upfront so we can review everything before printing and make sure expectations are clear.

🖨️ Print Tip of the Week: Rich Black vs. True Black

Not all black ink is the same - and choosing the right one can make a big difference in your final print.

True Black is made using 100% black (K) ink only. It’s best for small text, fine lines, and details because it prints cleanly and avoids color misalignment. This is the safest option for body text and anything that needs to stay sharp.

Rich Black is created by mixing black ink with small amounts of cyan, magenta, and yellow. This produces a deeper, darker black that looks more solid and bold. It’s ideal for large areas, backgrounds, and heavy graphics where you want black to really stand out.

🖤 Why it matters:
Using rich black for small text can cause blurriness, while using true black for large areas can sometimes look flat or gray. Choosing the right black helps keep your prints looking clean, professional, and intentional.

If you’re not sure which one your project needs, just ask - we’re happy to help make sure it’s set up correctly before printing.

❓ Print FAQ: What’s the difference between matte, gloss, and satin finishes?

Choosing the right finish can make a big difference in how your print looks and performs.

Matte finish has little to no shine. It reduces glare and fingerprints, making it easier to read under bright lights. Colors tend to look slightly softer, and ink absorbs more into the material, giving a smooth, understated look.

Gloss finish is shiny and reflective. It makes colors appear more vibrant and high-contrast because the ink sits closer to the surface. Gloss is great for photos and bold designs, but it can show glare and fingerprints more easily.

Satin (or semi-gloss) falls right in between. It offers richer color than matte without the heavy shine of gloss. Ink holds well while still reducing glare, making it a popular all-around option.

🔍 How ink plays a role:
Different finishes affect how ink is absorbed or sits on the surface. More absorbent materials (like matte) soften color slightly, while less absorbent surfaces (like gloss) keep ink sharper and brighter. That’s why the same design can look different depending on the finish you choose.

Not sure which finish is best for your project? We’re always happy to help you choose the option that fits your design and how it’ll be used.

❓ FAQ Friday

“Can you print just one?”

Short answer: we prefer not to.

Our shop is set up for multiples, and printing a single item often requires the same setup time and materials as a larger run. In many cases, one-off prints can actually waste more material during setup and finishing, which makes them less efficient for our workflow.

That’s why our pricing and processes are designed around small to large batches rather than single items. If you’re unsure how many you need or want help choosing a quantity that makes sense, feel free to reach out - we’re always happy to help.
