Killington Fire recently traveled to Plymouth for a multi-department training alongside Plymoth, Bridgewater, Ludlow, Proctorsville, Pomfret-Teago, and Woodstock Fire Departments.

Crews simulated a structure fire at the Old Hawk Inn, focusing on rural water supply operations and tanker shuttles. Killington brought both a tanker and an engine to the drill and shuttled approximately 9,000 gallons of water throughout the evolution, carrying 3,000 gallons per load.

Two portable tanks were established to maintain a continuous water supply to two suppression apparatuses, including Killington Engine 1.

This was a great opportunity to practice the coordination and communication required for a large-scale tanker shuttle while working alongside many of the mutual aid departments we rely on.

Thank you to Plymouth Fire for hosting and to all of the departments who participated. Training together before the call makes everyone stronger when it matters.

On a crisp, beautiful September morning 25 years ago, much like the morning we woke up to today, 343 FDNY firefighters donned their gear for the last time.

It was a clear September morning. People went to work, dropped their kids off, grabbed their morning coffee and started their day like any other. No one knew how quickly that day would change our country forever.

As the events of September 11, 2001 unfolded, firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS providers, Port Authority personnel and countless other first responders went to work doing what they had trained to do — helping people they had never met, without knowing if they themselves would make it home.

Many never did.

Today, we remember all 2,977 victims who lost their lives that day. We remember the firefighters, police officers, EMS providers and other first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice.

We also remember those who survived that day but carried its effects with them for years afterward, and the many first responders, recovery workers and others who have since lost their lives to 9/11-related illnesses.

Twenty-five years later, their sacrifice has not been forgotten.

From all of us at Killington Fire & Rescue Services, we remember those who answered the call, those who never came home, and those we have lost in the years since.

Who said training can’t be fun?!

This week, B Shift put a little twist on their training with a game of pickleball, with a twist - in full gear and on SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus.)

The goal wasn’t just to win. Crews had to focus on air conservation and management, hand-eye coordination, controlled breathing, and working through the added weight and physical demand of their gear.

A few members even mixed things up with a quick game of catch.

Did you know the gear firefighters wear can weigh upwards of 60 pounds? Training like this gives our crews a chance to work on important skills while keeping things competitive and fun.

A little Saturday station work!

FF Foote, Mowery, Hurst, and Flanders spent part of the day re-striping the Fire Department bays and freshening up the parking spots around the Public Safety Building.

A lot of prep, measuring, laying chalk lines, and paint went into getting everything cleaned up and looking sharp. Great work by the crew taking care of the station and keeping our facilities looking their best!

Tonight, members of Killington Fire & Rescue Services conducted a simulated winter water supply drill utilizing the department’s rural hitch device. The training scenario placed Engine 3 at the top of a steep hill with a simulated structure fire, while a tanker remained at a more accessible location along the road and supplied water to the engine.

This exercise demonstrated the importance of being able to deliver water to remote and difficult-to-access areas during winter conditions. In many locations throughout Killington, narrow roads, deep snow, steep grades, and limited turnaround space can prevent larger apparatus from reaching a scene. In this scenario, only the department’s four-wheel-drive mini pumper could safely access the structure, requiring firefighters to establish an alternate water supply.

Training evolutions like this help ensure our members remain prepared to overcome the unique challenges of rural firefighting- particularly during harsh northern winters- and continue providing effective fire protection to residents and visitors, regardless of weather, terrain, or access limitations.

A special thank you goes out to several local property owners who generously allowed us to utilize their property for this training. Access to realistic training locations is invaluable and helps our firefighters develop and maintain the skills needed to better serve and protect our community. Your support plays an important role in helping us prepare for the challenges we may face in real-world emergencies.

With dangerously cold temperatures expected tonight into tomorrow, please take steps now to keep yourself, your family, and your home safe.

If You Lose Heat or Power:
• DO NOT use propane heaters, grills, camp stoves, or generators indoors — these can cause deadly carbon monoxide poisoning.
• Never use ovens or stovetops to heat your home.
• Use approved space heaters only, keep them at least 3 feet away from anything flammable, and never leave them unattended.

Using a Wood Stove or Fireplace?
• Make sure your flue or damper is fully open before lighting a fire.
• Burn dry, seasoned wood only.
• Keep combustibles away and ensure smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms are working.

Extreme Cold & Frostbite Risk:
• In the temperatures we’re expecting, frostbite can develop in as little as 10 minutes on exposed skin.
• Limit time outdoors, cover exposed skin, and wear layered, insulated clothing.
• Watch for numbness, pale or waxy skin, and tingling - early signs of cold injury.

Protect Your Home:
• Let faucets drip slightly to help prevent frozen pipes.
• Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate.
• Check on elderly neighbors, friends, and anyone who may need help staying warm.

Extreme cold can become dangerous quickly - plan ahead, stay warm, and stay safe.
