There are four types of mud tubes that are used by subterranean termites:

exploratory
working
swarming castle
drop tubes
While mud tubes function to protect termites, these structures serve different purposes for the colony.

Termites will build shelter tubes up a foundation or across other surfaces to gain access to wood which is their food. Termites build these tubes out of particles of soil and their f***s. They use these tubes to "bring" their damp underground environment with them. They can't live in the outside air for very long.
