Fall tends to mean a little more time spent in the kitchen, and the holidays aren’t too far behind.

Natural stone can last for decades, but what you use on it matters.

Some of the products people reach for every day can actually damage the surface over time. Vinegar, citrus-based cleaners, abrasive products and DIY polishing or sealing products are a few we recommend avoiding.

Even everyday habits, like letting spills sit or dragging something heavy across the surface, can leave their mark.

One simple rule from our team: if it smells strong or feels gritty, it probably doesn’t belong on your stone.

Not necessarily.

A polished finish gives marble that reflective, high-gloss look. A honed finish is smoother and more matte. Both can be beautiful, and both can be the right choice.

What matters is the stone, where it’s installed, how the space is used, and the look you want to maintain.

Sometimes “dull” stone isn’t the problem. Knowing what finish you’re actually looking at is a good place to start.

In many cases, it doesn’t.

Scratches, etching, dull areas and an uneven finish can often be addressed through professional restoration. Depending on the stone and its condition, that may mean honing, polishing, repairs or a combination of processes.

Polished or honed?

It’s not simply a choice between shiny and matte.

A polished finish reflects more light and can bring out greater depth and color in natural stone. A honed finish creates a softer, more understated surface with less reflection.

Neither is automatically better.

The right finish depends on the stone, the room, how the surface is used, and the overall design of the space.

Sometimes restoration means bringing back a brilliant polish. Other times, the right result is intentionally quiet.

Because when you’re working with natural stone, the finish is part of the design.
