The city of St. Marys has been selected as the recipient of a Georgia ReLeaf grant for a tree giveaway project. The purpose of our project is to increase our tree canopy diversity and to educate the public about the benefits of native trees, how to properly care for them and how to put the right tree in the right place. Our tree giveaway will also educate us about the environmental, economic, social and health benefits of trees.
A Georgia Forestry Commission Community Forestry Specialist will be at the St. Marys Aquatic Center round-a-bout on Tuesday, November 18th from noon until 4:00 pm/or until the 200 trees are gone. He will provide tree species flyers from gatree.org and Tree Owner’s Manuals to help recipients know how to plant and care for their tree.
The giveaway is zip code restricted, per Inflation Reduction Act funding requirements. If you live within the highlighted area below, known as the “Climate and Economic Justice Screening Tool (CEJST), and are willing to share identification that shows your address you may be eligible for the tree giveaway.
3-gallon American Elms, Dahoon Holly, Sycamore, and Live Oaks will be available. The grant includes 200 trees, one per address within the CEJST area described. The information provided will be entered into Survey123 mapping tool.
We look forward to seeing eligible community members are we strive to keep St. Marys GREEN!
“Funding is provided by the Inflation Reduction Act and the USDA Forest Service in partnership with the Georgia Tree Council and Georgia Forestry Commission."
