The Practice of Therapy

The Practice of Therapy Helping clinicians navigate their private practice journey... Unsure about how to go into private practice? Are you disenchanted with working for an agency?

Has going into private practice always been your dream? Are you anxious about leaving the security of a "steady paycheck" or "steady job"? I was too!! If you are wanting to learn how to start or grow a private practice as a therapist, coach or counselor, you have come to the right place! This is the place to get information, learn and find the tools to build and grow a successful private practice

as a mental health health practitioner, therapist, counselor or coach. Over 15 years ago when I started my career as a therapist, I dreamed of having my own counseling private practice. I worked for an agency for over 8 years and got discouraged and was tired of working the long hours and dealing with endless paperwork. I took the bold move of delving into private practice and you can too! Today I have a thriving group counselling practice with 5 other contract counselors working with me. Boy have I learned a lot in those 15 years! Most of it the hard way!!! But it doesn't have to be hard or scary for you as to take the bold move of becoming your own boss and starting a private practice. My name is Gordon Brewer and I love being able to share all that I have learned in the 15 years that I have been in practice as a licensed therapist. I love collaborating and not only teaching, but learning from others.

Anxiety loves to drag us into the “what ifs” and convince us we won’t be able to handle what’s ahead.

But the future isn’t here yet... and mindfulness can help bring us back to what we can control right now.

Anxiety can pull us into the “what ifs” so quickly.

What if something goes wrong?
What if I can’t handle it?
What if this feeling never goes away?

Mindfulness helps us slow down and come back to what is actually happening right now.

Your website is more than just a place to list your services.

It can become one of the best tools for helping people find you, understand your expertise, and know whether you’re the right fit for them.

One of the best ways to build that over time is through helpful content — blogs, videos, podcasts, workshops, or resources that speak directly to your niche.

When you create content around the things your ideal clients are already searching for, you begin to establish yourself as a trusted voice in that area.

If you’re building a private practice, don’t wait to start working on your website and SEO. It takes time, but it can pay off in a big way.

What kind of content could your ideal client benefit from today?

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned after years in private practice is this: simple systems matter.

When I first started, I tried to piece everything together and do it all myself. But looking back, I wish I had simplified my systems and processes much sooner.

There’s no one “perfect” way to build a private practice, but having the right tools and structure in place can save you time, reduce stress, and help you focus more on the work that actually matters.

What’s one system in your practice that could be simplified?

Therapists can care deeply about helping people and charge for the value of their work.

This mindset shift is one so many clinicians have to work through in private practice: charging for your services doesn’t mean you care less. It means you’re building something sustainable enough to keep showing up.

Therapists deserve support, community, and a practice that actually works for them.

In this episode, Bianca Hughes reminds us that we have to get out of the narrative that therapists “can’t charge” and start thinking like business owners.

Because yes, therapists can help people and build sustainable practices.

Therapists were trained to help people… not become content creators.

But in today’s world, it can feel like private practice also means building a brand, marketing yourself, and constantly being visible online.

Has the game changed for therapists? 👀

We’re not blank slates as therapists.

We bring our own background, experiences, assumptions, and worldview into the room too. And the more we understand our own lens, the better we can stay curious about our clients’ worldview.

Culturally responsive therapy isn’t a one-time training. It’s a lifelong commitment to learning, listening, and doing the work.
