This month, we’re highlighting Ag Biotech Inc., a New York manufacturer whose international growth reflects the power of innovation and strategic support.

Founded in 1992, the company develops biostimulants and biofertilizers for agricultural markets. As domestic demand matured, Ag Biotech pursued new growth opportunities abroad under the leadership of CEO Robert Hudak and Director of International Development Tristan Hudak.

Expanding into global markets brought common challenges, including the high cost of market development, financing, and building new distributor relationships.

Through a network of support that included Empire State Development’s Global NY, export service partners, Niagara SBDC Business Advisor Bree Bacon, and NYSBDC International Trade Director Dr. Mercedes Sanchez-Moore, the company accessed guidance, funding connections, resources for distributor searches, trade show opportunities, and export financing tools.

Reflecting on that support, Tristan Hudak shared, “Receiving advice and being introduced by NYSBDC to funding resources and government-backed export programs was a turning point.”

Today, international sales account for 50% of annual revenue, with growing markets across Mexico, Southeast Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

Ag Biotech’s story shows how New York businesses can grow globally when innovation is matched with the right support.

If your business depends on vendors or suppliers, it may be time for a quick check-in:

✔️ Are deliveries consistent?
✔️ Have costs changed unexpectedly?
✔️ Do you have backup options?
✔️ Are communication timelines clear?
✔️ Could a regional supplier reduce delays?

A strong supply chain starts with reliable partners, and small adjustments today can help reduce disruptions tomorrow.

A 2024 Capital One small business survey found that over half of small business owners surveyed said their role caused them stress over the past year, while more than a third reported mental exhaustion. On the positive side, over 90% said they remain optimistic and believe problems can be solved.

If that optimism feels harder to reach some days, support can look like asking for help. You don’t have to do everything alone.

Long Island SBDC (Farmingdale) Assistant Director Lauren Linakis recently presented “How to Write a Business-Generating Capability Statement” to Scwbec (Suffolk County Women’s Business Enterprise Coalition). The presentation focused on how businesses can market themselves to government agencies and create an effective capability statement to help secure government contracting opportunities.

Thank you to everyone who attended and engaged in the discussion on creating impactful capability statements that help businesses stand out, build credibility, and generate new opportunities. We appreciate the opportunity to support and empower women-owned businesses across Long Island.

Yes to one more request.
Yes to one more task.
Yes to fixing one more problem.

Every “yes” carries weight, and for small business owners, it can add up fast.

Sometimes the healthiest answer is: not right now. 💚

For more than a decade, Dr. Stacey Secor has helped clients in Lockport access acupuncture and wellness services through Stacey Austin Acupuncture PC. Dr. Secor has served clients across Western New York through acupuncture, herbal medicine, and integrative care.

After years of steady growth, Dr. Secor reached a major milestone in 2025 by purchasing a new building, supporting long-term stability while creating room to expand her services. To prepare for this expansion, Dr. Secor worked with Niagara SBDC Business Advisor Bree Bacon to develop a comprehensive business plan, three-year financial projections, and a growth strategy.

She also worked with Bree to apply for a Microenterprise Assistance Program Grant offered through the Greater Lockport Development Corporation. The grant application was successful, and combined with owner investment, it helped fund upgrades to décor, machinery, and equipment at the new location. The expanded clinic includes updated treatment rooms and additional space for current and future clients. It also supported local job growth by creating a new office assistant role and expanding an existing team position to full-time.

Reflecting on her experience, Stacey shared, “Working with the SBDC was such a valuable experience. Their guidance and support through the application process helped me to secure the grant that allowed me to expand my clinic and better serve my community. I’m so grateful for their expertise and encouragement every step of the way.”

This Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re proud to highlight a small business helping others prioritize wellness, healing, and care. 🌿
