This article was included in an email from ASCE that I just received. Interesting read about the flooding in NJ within the Passaic River Watershed. Having lived in this watershed and within the flood zone for almost 10 years and having to rebuild my house after Hurricane Irene, I understand the need for a change.

There are proposals to keep the Passaic River from flooding badly, but they're costly and sound alarm bells for environmentalists.

Keynote speaker Brock Long, former Administrator of FEMA gave some interesting insight on how we should prepare for emergencies and what steps can be taken in advance to help the recovery efforts after the fact. Video #3- HX Drawbridge has finally been published!! I hope the kids enjoy learning about my favorite bridge and how counterweights work!!

As promised, video #2 for Virtual Career Day is here!! This one is specifically about Civil Engineering, so it is slightly more technical than the last. I hope the kids like it, and I promise that the next video about one of my favorite local bridges will be much more exciting!! (I apologize for the high pitched sound in the background, I think it might be the refrigerator causing some interference!! 🙁)

With everything going on in the world these last few weeks, I have been wracking my brain to figure out how I might be able to give back in a positive way. I can’t sew, so making masks is out. I don’t have a medical background, so I can’t help out on the front lines. So, what can I do from home? Celebrities are sharing their talents with us using at home concerts or makeshift talk shows, to help keep us entertained. That’s when I remembered my post from a month ago about Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day!! I thought about doing some science experiments and posting videos of them, but it seems that a lot of schools are using things like that as part of the homeschooling curriculum. So, I reached out to my cousin, who is an elementary school teacher in the Carolinas, and she had the idea of a virtual Career Day! So, it will be a great opportunity for me to not only introduce girls to engineering, but all youngsters!! Here is my plan (feel free to leave suggestions on how to improve my plan!) Video #1- I will give an overview of several different types of engineering, trying to relate it to things the kids do every day. Video #2- A focus on Civil Engineering, since that’s my area of expertise. If Video #1 and #2 aren’t a complete flop, I will try to put together a few videos about different types of bridges and how they work (especially drawbridges, because they have moving parts!)

Let me know if this is something your youngsters might be interested in or if you have suggestions!! I am hoping to get over my fear of recording myself in the next day or so, and get something out soon!! And, if you have a cool career that you’d like to teach youngsters about, engineering or otherwise, feel free to reach out and I will get you in touch with my cousin so she has a variety of careers for her students.
